US urges Pakistan to act against Taliban

Washington, Jan 23 (IANS): The US has urged Pakistan to immediately take action against the Taliban, after the militant group claimed last week's attack on a landmark hotel in Kabul that claimed 22 lives.

The Taliban militants stormed the luxury Intercontinental Hotel on Saturday. The siege had continued overnight as Afghan security forces battled the terrorists.

Addressing a press briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said: "We call on Pakistan to immediately arrest or expel the Taliban's leaders. Islamabad should prevent the group from using Pakistani territory to support its operations."

Sanders said "the attack against civilians would only serve to strengthen Washington's resolve in working with its Afghan partners.

"Afghanistan forces, with our support, will continue to relentlessly pursue the enemies who also seek to export terror around the world."

Islamabad had strongly condemned the attack and highlighted the need for cooperation among states in combating terrorism.
