Udupi: Accident Claims Bank Employee's Life

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Jul 29: Ganesh Kumar(40), an employee of Canara Bank Mulki branch near here, lost his life in an accident that occured at Ucchila on natinal highway 17 in the afternoon of Sunday, July 27.

Kumar was moving in his motor bike from Muloor towards Padubidri when an express bus moving towards Udupi hit him at about 3.10 pm. He died on the spot. The Udupi traffic police have confiscated the bus and Kaup circle inspector Vinay Gaonkar said, that the bus was smeared with blood stains.

The public are resentful about the aggressive manner in which the express buses moving between Mangalore and Udupi are driven, their frequent tussles with the staff of other buses and also the hurry with which the buses are moved in order to overtake the buses in front, inspite of numerous pot holes that have rendered driving difficult on this stretch of the road.  The bus was trying to overtake another bus and moving on the wrong side when the accident occured.

Ganesh Kumar, who was transferred to Mulki branch of Canara Bank from Panambur a month back, is survived by wife, working in Mailottu school in Mulki, a son and a daguhter. He was from Sooda and had rented a house in Muloor.

This is never new,it will be always the same untill and unless some action is taken against the speeding express buses.Forget about speed breakers you dont even find a ZIBRA crossing sign near Padubidri bus stop, where 100s of people cross the NH17 every day.Condolences to Mr.Ganesh kumar's family it was so unfortunate.

This once again brings forth the issue of rash driving by the private buses here.Even with bad roads if they can go so fast and make accidents then what will be the fate if they get good nice roads?

We blame the secondary culprit the driver, forgetting primary culprits- the department which is responsible for the safe roads, the contractor who minted money and cheated us by using inferior material and also the government for not monitoring the quality of work and maintaining it. Do we need monorail to travel from Mangalore to Udupi? Otherwise next Ganesh Kumar will be one of us.

Time and Again it has been brought to the notice of the authorities concerned that the buses plying on Mangalore-Udupi route and Mangalore City Buses are in true sense 'YAMDHOOTS'. The Drivers of these buses are not bothered about any body's life. They are only concerned about the passenger waiting to get into the bus. Even for one passenger, the Driver will risk and stop the bus mid-way not bothering about the other vehicles following his vehicle. The only way to stem this rot is to : 1. Nationalise this route. 2. Stringent action against the Driver, confiscate the bus, huge fine. Also I request the DC through this column to please for heavens sake seize all such buses whose horns are shrill.
