Padma award selection process transformed, says Modi

New Delhi, Jan 28 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the selection process for picking Padma award winners has been transformed under his government, asserting that more significance has now been given to the nominee's work than name.

In his monthly and this year's first "Mann ki Baat" address, Modi highlighted the works of some winners whose names were announced on the eve of Republic Day and said common people, who are not living in big cities and not seen in newspapers and TV, have received it.

In the last three years, he said, the selection process has been made online, which has led to transparency and anybody can now nominate people for the honours.

He called upon society to hear the stories of these winners so that they could enrich and inspire others.

Modi also spoke at length about the issue of women empowerment and said women are now moving ahead in all fields.

The performance of an all-woman BSF team during the Republic Day parade surprised guests, he said.

He also praised the "human chain" formed in Bihar against social evils against dowry and child marriage and said flexibility and continuous efforts for self-correction are a hallmark of society. With Mahatma Gandhi's death anniversary falling on January 30, he said no tribute to him can be bigger than following the path shown by him.

Eminent spiritual personality in Karnataka Siddheshwar Swamiji has turned down the Padma award that the central government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced couple of days ago.

In a brief letter that he wrote to PM Modi, just day after the government made the announcement about the Padma awards, the spiritual leader said he was a sanyasi and so little interested in accepting such awards.

“I am grateful to the Government of India for awarding me the prestigious “Padmasri”. But with all respect to yourself and to the Government, I want to convey my unwillingness to accept the great award,” he wrote.

“Being a Sanyasi I am little interested in awards. I hope, yu appreciate my decision of not accepting this highly valued Padmasri Award,” said Siddheshwar Swamiji who is based in Vijayapur of Karnataka.
Out of 73 Padma Shri awardees this year, seven including Siddheshwar Swamiji are from Karnataka. Assembly elections are due in the state later this year.

If one look into the nomination of India's highest awards, PM Modi even included LK Advani against whom cases are pending in the court. Aaj Tak anchor who has nothing outstanding done to the nation is also in his list. Prasoon Joshi man in controversy for 'Pamavta' are few examples nomination is going through wrong hands and awards are given to BJP and RSS inclined people.

Awarding Padma awards to film stars should be discontinued. Apart from making money for themselves and some of them serving politicians with their huge fan bases, most of them don't do any philanthropic work, moreover when it comes to tax evasion and hoarding tons of cash in safe havens they are always in the forefront. For example, Anupam Kher and Priyanka Copra were conferred with Padma awards in 2016. What Anupam Kher has done apart from strongly supporting Modi on each and everything and Priyanka Chopra is already into tax issues.
