Bangalore, Jul 30: If indications emanating from the corridors of Vidhana Soudha are to be believed, pro-tem speaker N Tippanna is likely to be nominated and getting elected to the post of the legislative council chairman during the ensuing election. Although BJP and JD (S) have lot of misunderstandings between themselves, they may join to make this happen, as interests of both these parties are involved.
The election is scheduled for Tuesday August 5. In the council, no party has an absolute majority and Congress with 29 members, is the leading outfit there, trailed by BJP with 23 members and JD(S) with 12. If JD (S) agrees to support BJP's plans, it will pave way for a smooth sailing for Tippanna. It is said that JD(S) has concurred with this proposal, as it will benefit it.
The fact that Tippanna is close to BJP leaders, has made him an obvious choice though he belongs to a minority party. BJP wants to floor Congress in the election and it cannot do so on its own. JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda is yet to express his views on this issue. JD(S) which opposed Congress during the trust vote may be forced to stay away from aligning with that party because of political necessity.
In Congress, many candidates are vying to get themselves nominated. A M Hindasgeri, Veeranna Mattikatti, V R Surdarshan, M V Rajashearan, V S Ugrappa etc., have been working behind scenes for promoting themselves. The scene will be clearer within a couple of days.
