Calicut bishop emeritus Maxwell Valentine Noronha passes away

Kozhikode, Jan 29: Dr Maxwell Valentine Noronha (92), bishop emeritus of Calicut diocese, Kerala passed away on Sunday January 28 at 11:20 pm at Nirmala Hospital, Marikunnu, Calicut, Kerala.

He was born on February 14, 1926 in the Noronha family at Kollam, a district in southern Kerala. He did his studies in the Kandy Papal Seminary, Sri Lanka. On August 24,1952 he was ordained priest. In 1953 he was sent to St Aloysius College, Mangaluru for BA graduation after which he served in St Joseph’s School, Thalassery as a teacher. In 1956 he was asked to pursue BEd at BEd college, Calicut. Having completed the BEd course he was sent to Rome for higher studies in canon law in 1957.

He was appointed the headmaster of RCHS Chundale in 1962 where he continued his service for 17 successive years. He was appointed by bishop Aldo Maria Patroni as the vicar general of the diocese in 1979.

On June 7, 1980 Pope John Paul II appointed Maxwell Valentine Noronha as the bishop of Calicut after Aldo Maria Patroni. He was ordained bishop on September 7, 1980. He served the diocese of Calicut for 22 years from 1980-2002. Bishop Maxwell resigned at the age of 75. He spent the rest of his life in the Shalom Priest Home at Vellimadukunnu, Calicut. Bishop Maxwell was a priest for 66 years and a bishop for 38 years.

The funeral will be held at 3:30 pm on Tuesday, January 30 at Mother of God Cathedral, Calicut.
