Belthangady, Aug 1: The local court imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 and half a day of police custody for Puttur rural circle inspector Ravish on Thursday July 31, in a case involving the arrest of wrong person due to mistaken identity.
A resident of Nidle named Lokaiah Gowda was facing charges of assaulting a person, in a case registered at the local police station. Ravish, who was working as sub inspector then, had arrested another person with similar name, thinking that he was the person involved. The namesake Lokaiah Gowda was produced in the court where he was remanded to 15 days judicial custody. The policemen realized later that they had nabbed a wrong person, and accordingly gave this information to the court.
Lokaiah Gowa who was released thereafter, registered a private complaint against the irresponsible behaviour of the police personnel. Acting on this complaint, the court had issued summons to circle inspector Ravish, constables Harish and Eshwar Gowda and informant Shyamsundar.
Ravish and other polciemen who appeared in the court once, chose to abstain from further hearings. When they did not appear in the court even after a warrant was issued, the court had served notices on the assistant superintendent of police, deputy superintendent of police and the district superintendent of police, instructing them to produce the policemen in the court. While other persons appeared in the court, Ravish failed to act. After these officers too failed to act upon the instructions, a notice was sent to the inspector general.
Based on this, Ravish surrendered at the court on Wednesday, July 30 and the hearing was adjourned to the next day. On Thursday, deputy superintendent of police H D Mendonca produced Ravish in the court. The judge remanded Ravish to police custody till evening.
Hearing was taken up in the evening, after which Ravish was fined a sum of Rs 1,000. He was also made to execute a bond stating that he would hereafter be present in the court in response to summons that might be served on him. The other policemen and informant were punished with a day's custody and Rs.1,000 each in fine a few days back.
