Mangalore, Aug 4: The Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) has decided to write to the Government to recruit 66 additional staff to strengthen its engineering, town planning and revenue sections.
The council of the corporation approved this move during its meeting last week.
The civic body had sought the additional staff to handle the expected increase in its activities to improve the infrastructure in the city. According to corporation sources, many of the projects are under financial assistance from Asian Development Bank and are expected to be completed by the end of next year. The corporation will be laying underground drains, constructing sewage treatment plants, laying water supply lines and upgrading the stretch between Hampankatta and Mahaveer Circle. Some of these projects have been partially completed.
The agenda for creation of 66 additional posts placed in the meeting stated that there was a need for a superintendent of engineer and a deputy director for town planning. The corporation seeks to create one additional post of executive engineer and one town planning officer. The other additional staffs proposed are: six assistant executive engineers, 16 assistant engineers, 16 junior engineers, two assistant town planning officers, two assistant revenue officers, four revenue inspectors, two assistant health officers and 12 health inspectors.
The agenda said that the jurisdiction of the corporation had widened from 73.6 sq. km in 1980 to the present 132.45 sq. km. But the Government had not posted adequate manpower to manage the infrastructure development.
At present, the corporation had 18 health inspectors for 60 wards. With the addition of 12 more personnel, the number of health inspectors would be 30. This would enable the corporation to place one health inspector for every two wards.
