Mangalore: Mayor Ganesh Hosabettu Quails on Journo Interrogation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (MM/CN)

Mangalore, Aug 5: Mangalore city corporation (MCC) mayor , Ganesh Hosabettu, was taken to task by journalists when he denied any knowledge of  protesting DYFI and CPI (M) activists outside the office on Monday, August 4.

The mayor put the blame on the protestors and said that he was not informed about the protest taking place outside the MCC building. He came to know of it only when  police caned the activists, he added.

Upon this he was asked how a mayor can be aware of the happenings in 60 wards of the corporation if he was unable to know that a protest was going on right outside his office. The mayor had no answer to this.

Hosabettu then said that he was scared to go in front of the protestors to accept the memorandum and a while later said that mayors normally don’t go to  the protestors to accept a memorandum. On this, a journalist reminded the mayor that he had indeed gone before protestors a few months ago to accept a memorandum. But Hosabettu denied it.

Then he was shown the video footage that taken during the earlier protest. After this, the mayor could do noting but bend his head in defeat.

Shankar Bhat, MCC whip, tried to rescue the mayor many times by diverting the issue. However, he could not answer the questions  properly. MCC commissioner Sameer Shukla, was also present on the occasion.

How many lies a Mayor can tell to public. Lie #1. He was in the Meeting and this prevented Him from leaving the chair to come out and meet the protester Lie #2. He was not aware of shouting Protest outside His office, which is only 50 ft. away. What was He thinking when He saw quite number of Police outside His office. Lie #3. He was afraid to face the Protest group any time, while Media showed Him that He attended the previous protests elsewhere. If the Mayor does not know what is happening outside His office, what else He knows about rest of the City. No wonder that problems inside the city are multiplying.

Ganeshji: You can't behave like a 'gentleman' when you are tackling today's media know-alls, who have nothing worthwhile to do. Next time they behave like this, simply tell them that no mayor can be instantly "aware of the happenings in 60 wards of the corporation." For that matter, the CM cannot have divine sight into all districts nor can the PM keep abreast of all states, until reported through proper channel. You must have asked the media insects if they could be aware of what was going on in their bedrooms back home, unless they receive information!

Dear Mayor, have courage. You cannot sit hiding. Whatever the issues, be honest and answer. Some issues may require some expert knowledge to deal with. But be bold and show some courtesy that you care for the people of Mangalore. We will have the satisfaction that atleast we have elected a mayor of wits and not a coward.
