Feb 8: Taking strong exception to the reference made to the fish-market in 'bad colour', National Fisherfolk Forum (NFF) demanded that the Supreme Court justice retract the phrase.
The statement from the NFF Chairman M Ilango comes days after news outlets reported Supreme Court Judge DY Chandrachud, hearing of death of special CBI Judge B H Loya asked advocates to refrain from heated exchange. He has asked the advocates from either parties not to reduce the courtroom to the level of a “fish market”. Terming the high decibel debate in the court room as 'unacceptable', Justice Chandrachud intervened and asked senior lawyers Pallav Shishodia and Dushayan Dave to calm down.
However the organization based out of Pondicherry said that the utterance of the phrase 'worse than a fish market' by the honourable justice is tantamount to disrespecting the total fisher communities and so highly condemnable. "The hearts of the fisher community people are pained as he has mentioned their activity in a case which has nothing in common (in relation to the case)," Ilango said
He further said that the fishermen community would like to know what was the necessity to draw their community name into the case. "More so, we would like to know why the activities of the fisher market should be mentioned in such bad colour. The fishermen community all over India is bewildered art such a derogatory remark by the Honourable Supreme Court Judge so respected by all," he said.
Speaking to Daijiworld, Ilango while accepting that trading areas such as markets are common place for noise and commotion, why refer it as 'worst'. "Can we refer court room or parliament with such term, no we respect the institution. So why refer our place of occupation like that, in what context it is worst. Its a market - people bargain, exchange and debate its normal. If a Honourable Justice would refer to us as such, then what would be our impression in the eyes of the common man he asked," Ilango said.
Terming the phrase as 'derogatory', the NFF demanded that the honourable justice take back the un-parliamentary words in the same forum where it was uttered.
