India seeks details of journalist's arrest in Maldives

New Delhi, Feb 10 (IANS): Following reports of two journalists, including an Indian national, being arrested in the Maldives amid a raging political crisis, India on Friday said that it has sought details of the case.

"We have received information about an Indian national, Money Sharma, working as a journalist, who has been detained by the Maldivian authorities," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said.

"We have asked our Embassy to get in touch with the local authorities to ascertain more details of the case," he added.

According to reports, Sharma from Amritsar and Atish Ravji Patel, an India-born British national from London, both employees of a foreign news agency, have been arrested under a Maldivian decree for "national security purposes".

The Maldives has plunged into a crisis with its President Abdulla Yameen declaring a state of emergency and arresting the Chief Justice and a former head of state.
