Thiruvananthapuram/Kochi, Feb 13 (DHNS): At least four people were killed and three others injured in an explosion on board a ship at the Cochin Shipyard on Tuesday.
Preliminary reports said the blast occurred at about 10.30 am in Sagar Bhushan, a drill vessel owned by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). The ONGC ship was berthed at the shipyard to carry out maintenance work.
Fire and Rescue Services personnel are at the accident site and the injured are undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital.
Police said the fire was extinguished and the cause of the blast is being ascertained.
Kochi Police Commissioner M P Dinesh told reporters that some of the deaths were caused by suffocation after the blast. Two of the deceased have been identified as Gavin and Ramshad, both Keralites.
