Beltangady, Aug 7: The Corps of Detectives police (CoD), in a raid conducted on Wednesday August 6 night, seized hemp weighing about one and half quintals from near Venoor here.
The hemp, stashed in gunny bags, was being transported in a Maruti Omni vehicle. CoD Mangalore division police, acting on a reliable tip-off, took into their possession both hemp stock and Maruti Omni vehicle.
Accused is identified as Gandhadagudi Lakshman from Moodukody village near here. He fled from the scene during the raid. Lakshman had earned the adjective, 'Gandhadagudi' to his name, after he was involved in the past, in the smuggling of sandalwood.
The value of seized hemp is estimated at Rs 21 lac.
Police sources have confirmed about the said seizure. Exact weight and value of the hemp seized are yet to be ascertained.
