Murder convict flees from police custody in 'chili attack'


New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS): A murder onvict escaped from police custody on Monday after his accomplices threw chilli powder on police personnel escorting him to a hospital here for a checkup, police said.

"The prisoner was coming out from Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences along with the police guard when his associates threw chilli powder on the police personnel to help him flee from police custody," said Deputy Commissioner of Police, Central, Mandeep Singh Randhawa.

The police party were from 3rd Battalion of Delhi Armed Police, he said. "Police fired four rounds but he managed to give them a slip."

A resident of Haryana, Sandeep was convicted in a murder case and was lodged in east Delhi's Mandawali jail.

Police personnel escorting the prisoner have been suspended and a case registered, Randhawa added.
