Panaji, Feb 25 (IANS): The women's wing of the Congress party in Goa on Saturday staged a protest march demanding a probe into the suicide of a newly-recruited woman police constable, who committed suicide earlier this month.
The constable committed suicide after a police officer she was in a relationship with allegedly refused to marry her.
Speaking to reporters after the march, which ended at the Goa Police Headquarters in Panaji, state Congress women's wing president Pratima Coutinho said the death of Constable Harshala Parsekar needed to be probed and the official she was in a relationship should be booked for abetting the suicide on February 4.
"We demand that the police Sub-Inspector responsible for this be suspended and booked. There has to be justice for Harshala. We have submitted a memorandum demanding action from the police," Coutinho said.
Meanwhile, a senior police official said that an internal inquiry had already been started against the police Sub-Inspector and his statement had also been recorded.
"We have also taken into custody the deceased woman constable's phone. We are examining its contents. Action, if needed, will be taken if an offence is established against the Sub-Inspector," the official said.
