Kerala Catholic priest stabbed to death by church sexton

Angamaly (Kerala), Mar 1 (IANS): A 52-year-old Catholic priest was stabbed to death by his former Church sexton while taking part in a pilgrimage here on Thursday.

Priest Xavier Thelekat, who was attached to the Angamaly diocese of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church and was the rector of the Kuruishmala Church near here, was attacked and killed by his former sexton, Jomy, an officer of the church charged with maintenance of its buildings and the graveyard.

According to the Church spokesperson Jimmy, the priest was coming down the hill as part of the Kuruishmala pilgrimage when the incident occurred.

"It took place at the sixth sector of the pilgrimage around 10.45 a.m., when the sexton suddenly came in front of the priest and following an argument, stabbed Thelekat," Jimmy said.

The spot, on the hill amidst a forest, is three km from any form of transport.

Thelekat was stabbed in the leg. He was bleeding profusely and although he was rushed to a hospital, he passed away, said Jimmy.

After the stabbing, Jomy ran into the forest and escaped.

According to informed sources, Thelekat had fired Jomy three months back.

Thereafter, Jomy had approached Thelekat a few times and requested he be reinstated, but the priest was not keen to take him back.

Former CPI-M legislator Saju Paul, who hails from the area, told IANS that he was shocked to hear about the sad incident.

"The priest was a very active person. He practised and advocated good deeds and took a lot of interest in social activities.

"He was always looking to see that the Kuruishmala pilgrimage gets more visibility and was keen to turn the place into a spiritual holiday destination," said Paul.

If I shout at a person, I think, he/she becomes my enemy. Instead of that a polite way of communication is good. I don't think shouting brings constructive changes in any person, but I do agree correcting a person is a must. Priests need to be replica of the COMPASSION OF JESUS CHRIST. So that this type attack could be avoided.

Priests are also humans they too can loose their temper, doesn't mean can kill them or anyone who shouts at you. Sometimes priests have to be strict and if an employee doesn't do his job he has to fired, many think kindness as weakness and they can do whatever they want.

Feel sad about the untimely death of the priest. R.I.P. If church authorities exercise little more kindness, humbleness and admin skills, these kind of accidents can be avoided.

Here the main Important tenant of Christian Law, 'Forgiveness' is overlooked.
Surely this is not an intentional murder.
A lesson for all those who are in authority n power.

@George mangalore, here it is a criminal act,so forgiveness has nothing to do.Law has to takeover this this .Some people dont understand what is criminal and what is acceptness.I am sure he must have done something which the priest didnt agree and was kicked off.He will certainly get his punishment when not in this world but above.May the soul of deceased priest rest in soul.when you speak of forgiveness ,then the soul of this priest should do but not we.Heartfelt sympathy to his family.

Few years back while I was discussing with catholic priest, told him, catholic priest generally are good in giving Dictation but not ready to receiving Dictation. This area, the catholic priest should change. The priest was very upset with me. I didn't care but gave my opinion with conviction. But both have not broken the relationship.

Here, if the deceased priest would have adapted a reconciliation positive attitude towards the sacked church sexton, then, I will bet, this situation would not have occurred. Indian culture is not used to hire and fire.
    RIP to Priest Xavier Thelekat.

The religious fraternity are also human beings like us ! as they are leading a normal life along with us and nothing special ! They are there to guide the life on religious guidelines but we often fail to adopt in our life.

Definition of sexton : A person who looks after a church and churchyard, typically acting as bell-ringer and gravedigger.

When it comes to employing people, priests are no different than us common people. There can be many reasons for firing a worker but if all of us go back to our ex-employers and attack them, the world population can be 50% less than now.

It depends on the circumstances; could be the Sexton was badly in need of the job; the trained priest should have given him another chance instead of rejecting him, which made him hopeless n he removed his anger in sudden desperation!!
