Cabinet clears Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill

New Delhi, Mar 1 (PTI): The Cabinet today approved a stringent Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill that provides for confiscating assets without conviction in cases where economic offenders flee the country.

The bill is aimed at deterring economic offenders like jeweller Nirav Modi from fleeing the country or not returning to face trial.

Official sources said the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the bill, which is likely to be brought before Parliament in the second half of the budget session beginning March 5.

The provisions of the bill will apply for economic offenders who refuse to return. Persons against whom an arrest warrant has been issued for a scheduled offence as well as wilful bank loan defaulters with outstanding over Rs 100 crore.

It provides for confiscating assets even without conviction and paying off lenders by selling off the fugitive's properties.

Such economic offenders will be tried under the prevention of money laundering act, they said.

This Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill only talks about "confiscating assets", but does not utter anything about prosecuting 'fraudster' or recovering the public money safely deposited in foreign tax havens.
There were many such Nirav Modis who had been helping the BJP increase its wealth and win many elections.Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election slogan ‘Na khaunga, na khane dunga’ proved ineffective in this case. An FIR had been lodged against Nirav earlier. How did he then manage to go to Davos and meet PM Modi, along with other industrialists?
The editorial said the Enforcement Directorate (ED) swung into action and sealed Nirav Modi’s properties only after he had left the country.
Talks of a corruption-free India and transparent government have been laid bare in just four years. Farmers are committing suicide as they cannot repay their debts of ₹100 and ₹500, but here people have absconded after swindling]lakhs of crores.”
