Congress leaders meet Meghalaya Governor, stake claim to form govt

Shillong, Mar 4 (PTI): After emerging as the single largest party in Meghalaya, the Congress staked a claim to form a government in the state at a meeting with Governor Ganga Prasad, officials and party leaders said today.

A delegation of three Congress leaders -- Kamal Nath, Ahmed Patel and CP Joshi -- met the governor at 7 pm last night, they said.

"We met the Governor and sought his invitation to the single largest party to be called first to form the government as per convention," former Union minister Nath told PTI.

The Congress won 21 seats out the 59 that went to polls last month. The party is 10 seats short of a simple majority.

After heavy losses in Tripura and Nagaland, Nath, Patel and Joshi reached Meghalaya from Delhi in a bid to form a government, party sources said.

The Congress has been in power in the state for the last 10 years.

Meghalaya Congress working president Vincent H Pala expressed confidence that regional parties such as the United Democratic Party, which won six seats, and the People's Democratic Front, which bagged four, will join the Congress.

"We are in talks. We hope that they will join us," Pala said.

The National People's Party (NPP) and its ally at the Centre and in Manipur, the BJP, together won 21 seats, though they contested independently.

The BJP has also sent its leader from Assam, H B Sarma, to the Meghalaya capital to help the ally form a government.

"We can only help the NPP and encourage the regional parties to form a government," Sarma told reporters yesterday.

Congress didn't apply a simple common sense to strategise their claim to form the govt. After Goa experience they thought running to the Governor to register the claim is more urgent and important than actually finding allies to support them in forming the Government. Even if u register the claim early, it is of no use if u don't have required numbers. Congress failed yet again. Who in Congress is going to take responsibility of this blunder ? This shows Congress is going..,... going.,... oh gone ☺.

Shameless BJP with just TWO seats in Meghalaya they are trying to form the government through the back door. Hook or crook - money power, EVMs, MLA shopping, media help etc.etc.. Only election management by BJP hence they have messed up economy and governance. People need to understand how it is so easy to flee after looting. Where does money come from for election rallies, and back door government formation ?

That's the power of BJP. One small state your party is not able to retain power , claiming moral victory on a BJP bastion that can Hold on it's fortress for 2 decades. That too with the help some hardiks. Seems like you are insecure about your party forming govt in Meghalaya.

2 seat Pakadke, Sarkaar banaane walo l.p. Baazigar nahi, Amithshahmodi Kehthe hai.Yaad Rakho, Kaise Ahmed Patel l.p. Dhauda dhaudake paani piladhiya ek MP seat ke liye. We will not let your looser party for form govt so easily.

BJP had not claimed for forming govt.it is other way they said they will support a non Congress govt headed by NPP which is a right all party has in democracy.and this useless Chor khangress r meeting the Governor without the support letters of other parties.more over timesheet bhandary in UP did not call BJP to form a govt when they emerged as the single largest party.just because you hate BJP / NDA you can't expect governor to act as per ur wish.if there is a IST election understanding within parties and the combined combination of new front I more than half way mark they can democratically claim to form the popular govt
So in total khangress secure 3 big zeros in terms of govt in NE

CONgress should respect the sentiments of people of Nagaland and Meghalaya who want CONgress mukt Bharat.
CONgress should stay away from rule and allow these states to progress which they did not under CONgress.
congress has lost its reputation as a national party cause they are nowhere near bjp and their political campaign and strategies are not up to mark .people of india are now more smart and know who and what is right for them. with sonia growing old and immaturity casual behaviour and lack of knowledge of rahul baba congress is going nowhere. they need to understand that gandhi legacy cannot be continued by rahul baba who is not fit as a leader who can be trusted or looked upon and they need to bring an end to nepotism for which they have always being targeted and choose a leader who is more sensible matured and understands indian politics well or else the miseries will continue and congress will suffer

Definitely a win win situation for congress.
But they have to handle the situation very well.
They should not make it like Goa and Manipur.

How come Congress can claim that they have support without the letter of Support
Congress Should get letters of support from NPP and UDP which they are not having and thus Governor should not invite Congress to form Govt as they may indulge in horse trading
