Why should I celebrate Eid, I am a devout Hindu: Yogi Adityanath

Lucknow, Mar 7 (Zee News): After triggering a row with his remark on Holi and Namaz timing, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that he is a devout Hindu and does not celebrate Eid. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongman made the statement of the floor of Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Targeting Congress president Rahul Gandhi and members of opposition Samajwadi Party, Adityanath said, "I am devout Hindu and don’t celebrate Eid. Why should I celebrate Eid when I take pride in my own religion? I am not one of those who sport sacred thread (Janeu) and at the same time wear cap (Muslim topi) and kneel down to offer prayers,"

He further referred to the victory of the NDA alliance in Tripura, where Left Front had been ruling for 25 years, in the recently concluded Assembly elections. Hitting out at Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, the Chief Minister said that after taking decimating the “red flag”, the BJP would now bring down those in “red caps”, which is worn by members of the Samajwadi Party.

Earlier, Adityanath had triggered a row by saying that the festival of Holi has to be respected by everyone as it falls once in a year while Namaz is offered many times.

Referring to the shifting of Namaz timing on the occasion of Holi, the UP Chief Minister said that he really appreciated that the timings were changed. Adityanath made the statement while addressing a public rally ahead of Phulpur Assembly bypolls, scheduled on March 11.

Ahead of Holi, Imam-e-Eidgah Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangi Mahli, who is also executive committee member of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), had appealed to the imams of different mosques, especially those in sensitive areas, to shift the timing of the Friday prayers by 30 minutes to an hour and, in the process, send a message of communal amity.

It implies no one should celebrate each others festivals. As per Yogi Religious Festivals are only for a community celebrating it. It was so different in my times . Exchanging goodies etc and the feeling of festivites irrespective of caste , religion etc

His utterances are a reflection of his petty and parochial mind. By all means, he is at liberty to follow the religion is which he is born and by all means he is at liberty to be proud of his religion. Nobody can take away that right from him. At the same time, he should not lose sight of the fact that he is the Chief Minister of a state and that state has people who are Hindus, Muslims, Christians and so on. He is not the CM of only Hindus, he is the CM of the entire state. By joining in the celebrations of Eid or Christmas, he is not going to be a Muslim or a Christian. The way I look it, a good Hindu is he who takes pleasure in celebrating the festivals of other religions. This Bhaiya doesn't realise that by joining the celebrations of the other communities, he will stand to gain the respect of all the people and will be seen to be secular and that is what is required of a people's representative. It is very clear that this fellow has a lot to learn of this world and the sooner he learns it and comes out of his closed mind, the better it will be for the people of UP. It will do him a world of good if he comes regularly to Mangalore and sees for himself the commendable way people of all communities live in peace and harmony here.

I Belong to Muslim community, I grown up with my Hindu brothers. We never come up with a taught of Hindu , Muslim or Christians. still we are a brothers from different mothers. We help each other in different circumstances.
Eid OR deepavali, astami, Ganesha chataruthi - Guys we will be waiting for that festival, My Hindu brother is more happier than me on that. He will bring all grocery stuff and give to my mother.
same as astami, we dance in street with huli vesha and join the procession of Ganesha festival and arrange some fund.

But some people are creating unnecessary things . But in this couple of years. we have only one news that says Hindu and Muslim.

Please please , it my request to all my brothers, Lets leave a peaceful life. !!!!

    Love you all......

He is not 'devout' Hindu but 'de-VOTE' Hindu. By his own argument, if a Hindu shouldn't be celebrating Eid, why a non-Hindu be celebrating Diwali, Holi, Raksha Bhandan etc? If some Mulsim or Christian leader says the same, how would Yogi and all his 'rogi' followers will respond? Is the freedom of professing and following religion is becoming exclusive right of the Hindus only in our country these days? People have elected you not to impelement 'religious' agenda but Constitutional agenda. You are protector of the Constitution and not religion. If religion is important to you more than the Constitution, resign from your CM's post, go back to Gorakhpur Math and practice what you want.

One final day the soil or wood will not ask you what is your caste or religion and that is the ultimate truth. Live happy and let others live happy.

What is the reason to tell this Yogiji. A true Hindu will never tell this. I have been born, bought up and living in between true Hindus they are wonderful people. In a democratic country people do whatever they like in a responsible and legal way.

You are a Hindu, inside your house. When you come out, you are an Indian. When you don't have this knowledge, you behave like a frog in the well. Therefore, Muslims, Christians or other religions' followers around which you can't tolerate because you think the nation belongs to you (Hindus). This is exactly when the problem starts. Why should you celebrate Eid, why should celebrate Christmas, so on.

Nobody asks you to celebrate Eid, instead you must allow those who celebrate Eid, to celebrate it than resenting them for being inside a country that belongs to you. India is a home to all religions, a harmonious coexistence will take us as a peaceful nation, ahead in many ways. Else we will disturb each other and destroy our own nation, none else.

Being a leader if you don't have the mentality of co-existence, its a big failure on the part of the people who voted for you to be their leader. Moreover, you have come to say this to a state where politicians of all communities gather in a function without discrimination. There is no benefit out of your coming to Karnataka and shame on the people who brought you here. At all there is something, its enmity, not cordial relationship between masses which BJP never wanted, nor ever will.

    @Ramesh,

Yogi is absolutely right. Let him follow his religion. But at the same time let others also follow their religion. Then he is secular.

One does neither become Muslim nor secular by wearing a scull cap. One becomes secular if he helps the needy without seeing his religion.
