India has 4.1 lakh beggars with most in West Bengal, Lok Sabha told

New Delhi, Mar 21 (Zee News): India has just 4.13 lakh beggars and vagrants, the Lok Sabha was told on Tuesday. West Bengal emerged on the top with just 80,000 beggars and vagrants, informed the Social Justice Minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.

Uttar Pradesh and Bihar has the second and third highest number of beggars on the list with more 65,000 and 29,000 beggars respectively.

Out of the total of 4,13,670 beggars, 2.21 lakh are men and 19.1 lakh women.

Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal has a total of 81,244 beggars and vagrants – including 33086 males and 48158 females.

In a written reply to Lok Sabha, Gehlot said that Lakshwadeep has just 2 beggars – the least number of the list.

Of all the Union Terrorities, Delhi has the highest number of beggars – 2167.

    Having a statistical background of the beggars in India is a good sign that we are conscious of the prevailing poverty in India. There are beggars everywhere in this world. So long as we have a concern over those beggars and so long as we have a thought for their progress of tomorrow, that is a step in the right direction.

    For a country as vast as India, just over four lakhs of beggars is not as bad as we thought. Now that our free meal program most of Indian schools, we are sure that sooner or later our concern towards beggars will attract more attention and that beggary will gradually diminish in India.

    Beggary will diminish but thievery will flourish, unless PM provides jobs to youths fast.

    How did they track the no. of beggars? By linking the beggars Aadhar card with Pan card? Or is it another jumla to show 2 crore jobs have been provided every year to Indians? or maybe all the ex-beggars are now working in Ambani's and Adani's companies?
