Cong says no links with Cambridge Analytica, BJP used its services in 2010

New Delhi, Mar 21 (Deccan Chronicle): Congress on Wednesday denied links with data analysis firm, accused in Facebook data privacy scandal and said that BJP and JD(U) used its services in 2010.

"Indian National Congress (INC) or the Congress president (Rahul Gandhi) has never used or never hired the services of a company called Cambridge Analytica. It is a fake agenda and white lie being dished out by Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad," Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said.

The response of Congress comes hours after Union Information and Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad attacked Congress for its alleged links with Cambridge Analytica.

Terming BJP as factory of fake news, Surjewala said, "BJP's factory of fake news has produced one more fake product today. It appears fake statements, fake press conferences and fake agendas have become everyday character of BJP and its 'Lawless' Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad."

Surjewala added, “Cambridge Analytica's linked website shows that in 2010 its services were used by BJP-JD(U). Firm's Indian partner Ovlene Business Intelligence (OBI) is being run by BJP ally's MP's son. OBI company's services were used by Rajnath Singh in 2009.”

Meanwhile, Facebook is having a tough time after Cambridge Analytica was accused of harvesting data of up to 50 million Facebook users without permission. It has allegedly used the data to help politicians, including US President Donald Trump and the Brexit campaign.

    The BJP has lot to answer on Cambridge Analytica scandal.
    The CA website also claims that it was hired for the Bihar assembly elections in 2010, when the BJP and JDU fought together. The website then states that ‘90% seats targetted by Cambridge Analytica being won.’ The BJP-JDU combine were the winners in the 2010 elections raising questions if the saffron party had hired a company which operates in stealing an individual’s personal data from social media platform.
    The BJP’s embarrassment doesn’t end here. A senior executive working for the Indian arm of the CA claims on his LinkedIn profile how his firm had helped the BJP secure 272+ seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. Himanshu Sharma, Vice President with Ovleno Business Intelligence, the Indian arm of Cambridge Analytica, claims on his Linkedin page, “Managed four election campaigns successfully for the ruling party BJP. Achieved target of Mission 272+ by managing call centre management project-profiling of each and every volunteer/supporter who had extended his/her support to get involved…Database to be provided constituency wise to BJP candidate as an additional support for national elections and state elections of Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Delhi.” In a startling revelation, a former BJP IT cell member has claimed that the whole BJP IT cell operates from the BJP head office 24 Ashoka Road where around 300 people work,20k FB pages and 300 fake news portals.
    In 2014 BJP has won the elections exploiting 'emotions' rather than promise of political revolution. While corruption was main plank started by fake Gandhian like Anna Hazare, Cambridge Analytica,
