Cobrapost sting shows some media houses ready to polarize voters for money

New Delhi, Mar 26 (IANS): A news website on Monday alleged that a sting operation on some media houses has revealed that they were ready to peddle Hindutva agenda to polarize voters on communal lines for money.

Cobrapost, the website that is known for journalistic sting operations, said one of its scribes carrying spy cams interviewed many media executives were expressed their willingness to polarise the voters for money.

They also expressed their readiness to malign image of political leaders, rake muck on most celebrated and members of legal fraternities and civil society, show judiciary in poor light and brand agitating farmers as Maoists, according to Cobrapost editor Aniruddha Bahal.

"Through our sting operation named Operation 136 several Indian media houses agreed to carry contents promoting Hindutva and to polarise elections on communal lines for money," Bahal told reporters here.

He said the media houses also agreed to malign images of opposition leaders like Congress President, Rahul Gandhi, West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and leaders from the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party.

Bahal said they were even ready to target Union Ministers like Arun Jaitley, Maneka Gandhi, Jayant Sinha and others from BJP allies like Upendra Khuswaha, Om Prakash Rajbhar and Anupriya Patel.

He said the sting was named Operation 136 because India is placed at 136th position in 2017 World Press Freedom Index.

He said the contents of the campaign were violative of various sections of the Indian Penal Code, which hold publication of content communal and defamatory nature a criminal act punishable by imprisonment.

He also said it was only the first part of the Operation 136 and the second part of the expose would be released in April.

Good initiative Cobrapost! But you targeted the wrong people in media organisations..ideally the sting should have been on the editorial team.....whom you have approached are all sales guys working on revenue generating mandates. In all your videos they are giving you solutions through adspots or sponsored content formats.

Moreover had you positioned yourself from congress or any other political party the sales guy's reponse would've been similar. It looms like It's not the media channels but YOU have a vested interest in creating disharmony.

Media houses have been aligning with political ideologies since a long time. Each major party has their own supporting section of media.
And this phenomenon is not confined to India alone.

It doesn't need a sting operation to realise this fact.

What we need is an intelligent populace that doesn't get swayed by this organised way of polarization.

As you said the whole world knows the current Indian Media, which should have been working as strong Opposition Party for any ruling party by demonstrating the voice of the common man. Media has now become the voice of the ruling or the powerful. No takers for common man. Hope the voters will exercise wisdom rather than sentiments in choosing governments.

95% of TV and other media are controlled by BJP to spread the fake news and arrest anyone who complains about them. On top of this they use CBI and IRS against their opponents. Media from rest of the world is reporting it. If the EVM's don't work then they buy MLA's like in Goa and a state in Northeast. Only God can save India from these morally corrupt people.

Since 2014 Indian media became more chaotic than 'Big boss'. It is the first time in the history of India Supreme Court need to warn the media how to behave.
Thanks to Chee Tv, Republic of jungle ape, Times wasted and Sudharshan and so on.

Only in PM Modi's India main stream media can beam fake news like chip in new currencies and still not held accountable.
It is time to name and shame the media.
