Pune, Mar 30: Ugadi heralds a new year on Chaitra Shuddha/ Shukla Pratipada. The Samyukta Konkani Sabha Pune, whose members are from the Gowd Saraswat Brahmin community, organized a typically solemn function to welcome the new year Shalivahan Shake 1940. Popularly referred to as the Sansar Padvo it is actually the Sanvatsar Padvo indicating the welcoming of the new year.
The function was held at Dr Kalmadi Shamarao High School, Dr Ketkar Road, Bhonde Colony, off Prabhat Road and Karve Road, Pune on 18 March 2018, from 4 pm to 9 pm. The function was unique and was attended by nearly 200 Samaj Bandhavas.
The function began with the recitation of Vishnu Sahasranam followed by Samuhik Satyanarayan Puja, Kalash Seva, Bhajan, Mangalarati, Panchang Pathan, followed by distribution of Tirth Prasad.
The Shri Vishnu Sahasranam Pathan was performed by a group of around 10 ladies. The rendition filled the air with piety.
Samuhik Satyanarayan Puja was performed by the sabha president Krishnakumar Pai. The community priest Shri Ratnakar Bhat explained the puja by narrating a story. The Kalash Seva and Bhajan were performed with traditional fervour. 24 sevedars performed the Kalash Seva, proceeds of which will be used for community welfare programmes. Performers of the Kalash Puja were presented in traditional style with a copper kalash and a steel plate. The puja was followed by Mangalarati.
Satyanarayan pooja and aarti were performed by Krishnakumar Pai and Arathi Pai under the guidance of Ratnakar Bhat, Shripathi Bhat provided all necessary support during the puja.
The renowned classical vocalist Pandit Upendra Bhat, explained the Panchang details in Konkani. Veda Murthi Manjunath Bhat read out the Panchang in Kannada. Pandit Upendra Bhat explained the Panchang details in a lighter vein by comparing stars and planets with the political set-up. This made it easier to understand the Panchang Pathan.
Music artistes enlivened the function. The performers included members of the sabha, which organizes Bhajan sessions at the Sabha premises near Deccan Gymkhana every fortnight. Kusuma Bhat, Meenakshi Kamath, Prakash Shenoy and others formed a great Bhajan group supported by Chandru Shanbhag on the harmonium and Manjunath Nayak and his guru Gosawi on the tabla.
Tirth Prasad and a composition of sugar and neem leaves was distributed to all.
After the traditional rituals, dinner consisting of mirya kanna paanak, fugya mirsangi baje, happolu, chano aani kadgi ghashi, tendlya talaasani, shiita, daali toya, saaru, sukrundo and madagane (payasu) was arranged. Janvi Babu Rao and yajaman sevedar Shri. Krishnakumar Pai were main donors for this event.
True to the timetable, everything worked to precision.
Advertisements for the souvenir, donations in cash, relishing food by the catering service provider, seva by volunteers and participation of community members, all put together made the entire function look like an extended family function.
The wholehearted participation of the bandhavas was very satisfying. The Samyukta Konkani Sabha Pune records its gratitude to all the bandhavas for making the Ugadi function a truly memorable one.
Meenakshi Kamath, Archana Kini, Suhas Joshi, Suhas Bhat, Raghavendra Nayak, S R Shenoy, Ramnath Shanbhag and Govind Shanbhag volunteered in making the programme a grand success. Vighnesh Pai and Nagesh Wagh captured the colourful moments by camera.
The Samyukta Konkani Sabha Pune urged the bandhavas to be even more participative in the upcoming Samaj functions.
