Fr. Pius Fernandes Writes from Orissa : Christians in Deep Trouble

Fr Pius Fernandes from Bhubaneshwar writing on authentic incidents at  Khandamahal Dist.  Orissa. The burning and looting is continuing even as he writes this article (Aug 26, 10.00pm).

Bhubaneshawr: Aug 26: Violence re-erupted within the Indian state of Orissa today.  The attacks performed by Hindu extremist groups are just one link in a long chain of events that have continued to strain Hindu-Christian relations within the state.

Today's attacks were triggered by the killing of a prominent Hindu leader this past weekend.  On Saturday, August 23rd, Swami Laxanananda Saraswati along with five other people was shot dead in his Jalaspeta Ashram near Tumudibandha (Kandhamal District, Orissa).  Naxalite groups, especially prominent in this region, have taken credit for the attacks. The Swami was 84 years old and was especially known for violently opposing cow slaughter and conversion to Christianity. He is also believed to have orchestrated the Christmas 2007 riot against Christians in the Kandhamal district of Orissa which has left thousands of Christians homeless to this day.  Since the December attacks Hindu-Christian relations have remained tense within Kandhamal.  In retaliation for the August 23rd killings the VHP and its allied political families called for a bandh (road blockade) for the 25th of August. In the meantime a judicial enquiry is ordered into the incident, though many opposition parties have called for the resignation of Naveen Patnaik's for failing to maintain law and order.

In retaliation for the Swami's death, the extremist wing of the VHP has engaged in a series of attacks against Christians which started on 23 rd and are expected to continue.

On 23rd evening immediately after the news of  murder of Swami Laxmanaadada Saraswati spread in the district, two sisters of Precious Blood congregation at Kothaguda who were on their way to Berhampur were stopped near G. Udayagiri, pulled out from the vehicle. Vehicle was then set on fire and the driver was severely beaten up. Almost at the same time a vehicle carrying HM sisters near Ainthapally in Sambalpur, a prayer chapel at Tentuliapadar in Sundargarh was also burned and destroyed. With these incidents, the stories of violence, abuse and attacks continue with several churches, church institutions, priests, Nuns, Christian people and their houses being attacked, abused, ransacked, and torched.

As the impact of the news started getting visible across the state, government got into action by announcing prohibitory orders (144 Section) in Kandhamal district. This was also a preparatory action by the state government ahead of the 12-hour bandh called by the VHP and other affiliates of the Sangh Parivar on 25th august to protest the killing.

On Sunday morning 24th August 2008, prayers in many churches were disrupted with very few participants attending the mass fearing attacks.

From the same day attacks in Kandhamal district intensified. It was the turn of Janvikas office like many other offices which were burnt to ashes during the violence in December 2007. Jan Vikas is a social wing of the Archdiocese of Cuttack Bhubaneswar and works towards empowerment of the most marginalised in the districts. A mob attacked, ransacked the office and set fire burning down three four wheelers, six motor cycles, all the important records and documentation of the organisation and office equipment. This incident took place at 5.30 in the evening.

After this, the mob continued their assaults at Divya Jyoti Pastoral Centre by gutting, burning and looting the same at about 6 p.m. The same group entered the Baliguda presbytery, convent and hostel damaging the properties.

In similar attacks, the Roman Catholic Church at Kanjamedi was attacked and vandalized at 6.30 p.m. The Diocesan Church at Kanjamedi was ransacked and other three Pentecostals churches were destroyed in the same way at 6.45 p.m. by the same group. In the late evening, about 12 Dalit Christian shops were burnt to ashes in Raikia.

On 25th August 2008 as the Bandh lead to many protests, rastha rokos, tyre burning etc., the following incidents of violence shook the whole state and the Christian community. At 7.00 a.m, Phulbani Church and presbytery were vandalized and ransacked. Srasanda MC Brother's residence was attacked and the patients who came there to get treatment were beaten up and the VHP activists continued to burn houses and household articles of Christian families in the area. Eight houses were completely destroyed in this incident.

On the same day at 10.30 a.m houses of Christian families in Christiansahi in Balliguda were destroyed and ransacked. The details of damage and the numbers are not available as yet. In a similar incident houses in Nuasahi were set on fire destroying the whole street where Christian families lived. This incident took place at 11.30 a.m.

Two boys studying in the church run hostel were caught in Baliguda and their heads were tonsured.

In the afternoon at about 1.00 pm Jamaj Parichha's house was attacked and his vehicles were set ablaze, doors were cut into pieces and he was beaten up by the mob. He sustained severe head injury and is hospitalised (place is not disclosed because of the security reasons). It is said that he is one of the primary targets of the hindutva forces in the area. His wife being a Hindu pleaded the mob to spare him and even showed that she practices Hinduism but they showed no mercy continued beating him up and said "he is a Christian and we will kill him".

As this incident happened, houses of the staffs of Jan Vikas (Diocesan organisation under the Arch Diocese of Cuttack- Bhubaneswar) were also burnt. Five staffs are directly affected by this violence and all of them fled their villages and went into hiding.

In a very similar way, at 2 pm the house of Puren Nayak resident of Bhudansahi was attacked and burnt into ashes. All his assets were removed from the house and were set on fire in a pile. . As the violence continued in the village, mob ransacked the Christian houses burnt all their belongings. The women (Hindu) in the community were identifying the houses to be burnt down as the mob followed their instructions. Women also supplied kerosene to encourage the mob.

The strategy used by the mob is very similar. The household articles and assets are brought outside the house and are set on fire. This is because under Indian Penal code section 436, the person/persons involved in burning the house are punishable with 7 years+ of rigorous imprisonment and this falls under the category of a non bailable offence. And when the assets/belonging are brought outside the house and burnt, it's a bailable offense and the punishment is limited to 6 months to one year of imprisonment. This offense falls under IPC 435.

Fr. Challan, Director of Pastoral centre, Kanjamendi and Sr. Meena, administrator of the centre which was burnt and ransacked on 24th escaped from the centre to hide in Jashawanta Pradhan's house. On 25th, mob having the information about this forcefully entered the house dragging both of them outside. They were beaten up badly and taken to the police fundi (smaller unit of police station) in the area. It is reported that they were tied up in the fundi and were threatened of being burnt alive. There is no update about their condition since then.

Paul Pradhan who runs an NGO in the district and works for the rights of dalits and adivasis was also attacked in his house, office was destroyed completely.

It is also reported that most of the Christian houses in Tikkabali block were attacked and set fire. Numbers are still unknown.

One person called Vikram Nayak was cut into pieces at Tiagian under G Udaygiri police station. Other two sustained injuries while no medication facilities have been made available and it is reported that both two persons were died. In Tiangia village under the same police station limits, houses of Christian families were set on fire and people have fled to jungle. It was reported that the miscreants have been following them and were attacking.

On 25th late night, Sankrakhol Parish church and presbytery were set fire and ransacked, the parish priest Fr. Alexandar Chandi left to the nearest forest and he was saved. It is reported that his most of the assets are set fire and church is completely destroyed.

Fr. Bernard Digal who had gone to visit Fr. Alexandar Chandi was held up in Sankrakhol parish when the mob attacked the church. His Marshal Jeep was set fire. While narrating the incident Fr.Bernard said that when the mob enters the church premise they left to the forest and hid themselves. They were safe but the vehicle was set fire. He walked around 10.K.M to reach one of his relations house. As he was walking the attackers were use to see him but could not recognise.

  • On 25th August late night the Convent of St.Joseph's at Sankrakhole was attacked and ransacked.  Sisters also left to the forest and have saved their life.
  • On 25th August 2008, Abenswar Digal's house is set fire, under Tikabali Police station.

In Raikia, attacks are on as of 11.30 p.m. and the nature of damage is yet to be known. As per the   first information report reveals that  on 25th August late evening at Raikia 17 Christian houses were ransacked. Most of the house articles and assets were removed from the house and gather outside and set fire.  As per the first hand report the victims identified were Mr. Bijay Parichha, Mr. R.K.Nayak, Mr. Joseph Nayak, Mr. Susant Dal Behera, Mr. Santosh Nayak, Mr. Santun Nayak, Mr. Harihar Das, Mr. Mosesh Nayak, Mr. Prakash Nayak, Mr. Raju Parichha and others.

  • On 25th August 2008 late night The Ambasodar Vehicle of Mr. Sukant Nayak, Director Shahara (NGO), was set fire.
  • On 25 th August 2008 late night The Office of Karuna (NGO), under Raikia Police station were ransacked.
  • On 25th afternoon the Pentecostal church at Budamaha, under Raikia Polic station was vandalized and ransacked.
  • On 25th August 2008, Masadkia church was vandalized and ransacked.
  • On 25th August 2008, two Pentecostal churches were vandalized and ransacked.
  • On 25th August 2008, Pisermaha Church, under Raikia Police station was vandalized and ransacked.
  • On 25th August 2008, Baptist church and R.C Church at Mondakia under Raikia Police station was vandalized and ransacked.
  • On 25th August 2008, Mdahupanga Church, under Raikia Police station was vandalized and ransacked.

As the violence continues, most of the parish priests and sisters are still not reachable and their conditions are not known. The houses are being burnt in several places in Phulbani, Srasanada, Pobingia, Balliguda and Konjamendi.

In Bhubaneswar, the impact of the Bandh was also felt severely by people with most of the office being closed, shops stayed closed as well. Transportation was totally disrupted and tyres were burnt in many places across the city. There were huge rallies by the supporters of VHP and Bajrangdal on the main roads and junctions.

There were also some cases of attacks reported within the city and most of these attacks were on churches and church related institutions. From early morning of 25th onwards violent mobs made several attempts to enter the compound of Catholic Church and Archbishop's house in the city with a view to attack. Policemen deployed at the scene disbursed the mob and stopped them from entering the campus. Angry mob threw stones at the guest house of Archbishop's House, damaging some windows panes.

Another group of fundamentalists entered presbytery in Duburi parish, managed by the SVDs and destroyed and damaged property. Two priests of the said parish Fr. Xavier and Fr. Simon are missing and they were about are yet to be found. Institutions like XIMB, St. Arnold's School and   NISWASS have suffered some damages while one Baptist Church in Akamra Jila in the city was also damaged.

Situation seems to be very serious and worsening by every hour with violence being intensified. From across the districts, people are trying to flee to the safer places. But nothing seems be safe as of now. The violence can turn more intense as the people return after Swami's cremation.

Other events that took place in Rayagada, Gajapati, Koraput and other south Orissa districts left Christians and Christian institutions throughout the state fearful.  Father Obed Khura of Sunebeda received three threatening calls. While he approached the Sunebeda OIC, has was refused police protection and was sent back with assurance that the school he runs will not be attacked and was instructed to stay away from the school.

In Muniguda (closer to Tumudibandha, Rayagada district), as the mass was coming to an end two jeep loads of youth from the town entered the compound and started shouting slogans. The police arrived on time and prevented the situation from escalating. Three policemen have been deployed at the gate which has been destroyed. The Church and Convent at Muniguda could not be saved. Around 80 inmates under the leadership of Fr. Pius Ekka and Sr. Marina Chacko have taken refuge in the forest. This happened inspite of the fact that Fr. Marshal Mihir Upasi was constantly in touch with the State Control Office of the Orissa Police and the SP of Rayagada. The mob first torched the police Jeep in Muniguda and then proceeded to the Convent and Church. On the previous day (24th of August) the mob threatened the Fathers after Sunday Mass. The mob sought out the houses holding Christian families and managed to destroy some of them.  As a consequence allowing refuge to families has placed others at risk.

As the mob moved on from Bhairaguda, 3 km away from Muniguda to seek shelter in a school while raining, the villagers from the hindu community fed them. This took place at 7.20 pm.

Expecting an attack Fr. Manickthan, Bhawanipatna asked for protection, the SP expressed his inability to do anything due to the size of the mob. When Father suggested the SP on announcing curfew in the area and stop the mob's movement, the angry SP retorted saying that Fr. need not give orders to him.  Later in the forenoon both the ADM and the SP visited the Church compound and inspected the law and order situation. The Malankara hostel was attacked in Bhawanipatna, not far from the Catholic Church, and many children have been badly hurt.

Missionaries of Charity from Dharmagarh, unaware of the events from the previous night, were travelling to Bhawanipatna for Sunday Mass.  Near the jail in Bhawanipatna town their ambulance was intercepted and pelted with stones.  All the sisters sustained minor injuries from the stones and broken glass.  The police arrived and sent them back in the same damaged vehicle to Dharmagarh.  Sr. Suma and Sr. Nirmala have been informed of this and the district administration has assured them of protection.

A group of police are guarding the Church in Jeypore after the threat of oncoming attacks. The police informed Fr. Bimol Nayak that some 200 people are preparing to attack the Church.  Fr. Bimol Nayak and another Brother have taken shelter with nearby friends.  Around 24 policemen are guarding the church compound in Mohana after road blocks started on Sunday evening.  Additionally, a group of 9 police men are safeguarding the Church in Goudogotho and the Cathedral.

It is also reported that the Lutheran Church in Malkangiri, Padua, and Gunupur were destroyed. Fathers and Sisters along with the children in Gumuda have left the mission stations fearing attacks.  On the 24th as the Congregation was coming out of the Church in Malkangiri, a group of angry youth harassed them and forced them to recite Bande Mataram. 22 Christian Families of Shanti Nagar (Givindapur) at the foothill of Taptapani Hot Spring were also assaulted and forced to leave the village.

In Boudh also, a group of protestors entered the parish and destroyed things and property. Communal tension was high also in other districts across the state with several incidents of attacks against the people as well as property. In Balasore, Balsore Social Service Society (official social wing of the Balasore diocese) was attacked three times during the day on 25th august. The mob shouting slogans broke all the window panes and destroyed a statue of Mother Mary which was installed in the BSSS office campus. Badrak also had few incidents of attacks but the details are not known.

Hindu protestors attacked Jyoti Niketan of Baipariguda in Koraput district in the afternoon of 25th August. Father Joy Areeckal had to run into the forest and the hostel children and his social workers are subjected to insults and intimidation. The Mission has been destroyed along with all that it contained. A sad twist to the story is that the police along with the people seized wooden planks in spite of the fact that the carpenters who are building a new hostel building in the campus there claimed that it was bought by them. Consequently, a criminal case may be filed against Fr. Areeckal under the Forest Act.

Mr. Routo Desinayak and Ms. Kalyani, who works for an agro-entrepreneurship program for SWAD at Boipariguda were also arrested under the forest protection act. Though the Police Officer and the Block Development Officer was not willing, the mob forced the police to tie Mr. Desinayak with a rope and drag him through the street up to the Forest Office. Miss Kalyani being a woman was spared of this ordeal. Fr. Thomas Chelan and a Sister (name could not be obtained) who were manhandled and humiliated by the mob have been kept in police custody in the pretext of giving security since the morning of August 25th.

In Govindapally, close to Boipariguda, protestors entered the Convent and damaged the grotto of Our Lady and the Cross of the Church yard. In the same district Fathers and Sisters in Koraput, Jeypore and Semiliguda are in hiding.

In Bargarh district, a mob of about 2000 people went around ransacking many church institutions and there were serious attacks on priests and nuns. In Padampur, Fr. Edward Sequira was attacked and was beaten up brutally. He survived with serious head injury and still unconscious. "His life is under critical still" said Fr. Alphonse Toppo, Vicar Gerneral of Sambalpur diocese.  The institution which caters to children affected by Leprosy was attacked and burnt. While the institution burnt to ashes, along with it also burnt was the auxiliary nurse Rajani Majhi 20 year old, who took care of the children in the institute and was studying in Padampur Women's College.

Sundargarh also saw many such incidents of church burning and attacks on church properties damages are yet to be ascertained.

In Sambalpur district, HM Sister's residence of Ainthapalli has suffered damage while priests are given warnings of attacks in Madhupur, Badibahal area. Stone pelting and breaking of window panes of churches and related institutions was a common scene across the state.

In continuation to all this violence across the state, Dibyasingh Pariccha, PRO and Secretary, Justice and Peace Commission (Arch Diocese of Cuttak Bhubaneswar) has condemned the killing of Swami Laxmananda Saraswati and appealed for a CBI enquiry into the incident. He requested that culprits responsible for the incident be punished instead of attacking the whole Christian community.

He appealed to the government to deploy adequate forces to safeguard life and property of Christian people.

It is reported that people are suffering from with out food, cloth and shelter. Last night, there was heavy rain and people were in the forest with the wet cloth.  However, the condition of the children and women were indescribable. School children are deprived of their studies.

Its shameful & drastadly... Right now our egos are hurt as the media is constantly feeding our imaginations with the reports of atrocities across Orissa & Karnataka. But what will happen tomorrow? All of us will be busy with our own lives putting all these issues to back burner. I request all christians to help these victims to rebuild their life fearlessly.

And show the world with what stuff we are made of. Let us continue doing what we have been doing for centuries, that is serving the humanity, the most under priviledged once with the only motto of service.

It is a shame for our secular country. India is 'shining' under VHP for shooting, burning, rioting, stealing, raping, violating human rights... The Government is passive. Where is the freedom of Religion. People should open their eyes and see that India needs Christian transformation. Missionaries have done their best and will be doing it. Slavery should vanish. Our missionaries should be respected. let us pray for those who do not know what they are doing... Fr.Dr.Ivo da C.Souza (Holy Spirit Church, Margao, Goa, India)

The real problem in Orissa are the foreign missionaries, mainly the American and Australian. Graham Staines was known for His virulent comments on Hinduism and Hindus. Same goes with the multitude of Christian denominations in Orissa. It is the new converts to the Born -Again and other churches which does not show regard for hinduism and hindus which are part the problem in Orissa.. The pope also needs to recognize hinduism as a religion and a way of life. As far as I know he has not recognized hindiusm as a religion or a way of life. By the way, I feel ashamed such things have happenned in our punya bhoomi.. I personally condemn all sort of violence in the name of religion.

Persecutions are not uncommon to Christians..For Jesus Christ himself was tortured and killed because HE challenged the religious traditions and political system of those days.Later his apostles too were persecuted. And recently Graham Staines and other missionary died for the same reasons..Obviously ,how can the world that hated the Master love HIs disciples????

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ, Bible has something for us all, Below given verses are taken from Gospel of Luke, read, understand and you shall realise the responsibility of a Christian Lu 21:10 Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: Lu 21:11 And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. Lu 21:12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. Lu 21:13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony. Lu 21:14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: Lu 21:15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. Lu 21:16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. Lu 21:17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake.

To all those who suggested means to raise awareness such atrocities, including Anita, Don and Martis - a big thank you. These are small but important steps to fight such fascist behaviour, and surely is the way forward. I think it is high time we alerted the State Department and the FBI (and local groups) to the active and huge presence of these groups in the US and UK, through their front organisations (there are quite a few, some obvious, some not-so-obvious, such as VHPA, HSS, IDRF, etc - you can view the info on some of the sites mentioned, such as coalition against genocide and stop funding hate).

I think it is time we actively petition the authorities to categorize them as terrorist organisations (there's no shortage of proof). We can also point out the fact that hate websites are being run in the US with impunity . In fact, one of the founders of these hate sites gleefully gave an interview to the New York times recently.

Lastly, I am sure a lot of people are now aware enough of the reality around them. Folks in the US and the UK can also create awareness among local communities and Senators/ MPs about what's going on here. There are also active christian sites like persecution.org that monitor persecution across the globe

Lastly, Let us let people know that this about the future of our country and our way of life, not about christians alone - in fact, quite a lot of those who have been active members of the anti-fascist campaign are decent, peace loving Hindus and Muslims who love their country too much to let it go into the hands of fanatics.

It was heartening to see Modi being denied a visa. The time should come when all members of these fanatical organisations and their fund raisers are kept under active surveillance for supporting terrorism. They should not only be denied visas but are also be prosecuted for propagating hate.

Well said Mr. Don Frank. I call upon all Christians to wake up from their deep slumber. Mr. Martis has provided some useful email ids, please wake up and send emails. I found one more email id which I think would be useful for us. email: research@awaazsaw.org / contact@awaazsaw.org. Mr. Ron Sequeira, I agree with you fully. I too have browsed/read some of the hate sites. These sites show how much hatred they have against minorities. What these fundamentalist groups do is whenever a natural calamity strikes or terrorist attack, in the name of helping the victims, they invite MPs (UK), senators/representatives (USA) for their fund collection campaign/meetings and collect funds from people of all religions (including the much hated Christians & Muslims!!!) and transfer the funds to their sister concerns in India.

Log on to www.awaazsaw.org, www.stopfundinghate.org/compaign. Mr. Sequeira you rightly said, ‘all we need is the will’. Do you have any information/details of any US/UK/Canada government organizations where we can register our complaints? Catholics living in the USA/UK/Canada, please help. I would suggest all like minded people, join together to start a group and let us expose these fundamentalist groups. Wake up Mangaloreans.

Dear Fr. Pius Fernandes, thank you so much for your very very informative Article,May God bless you and protect you all. We are with you in our prayers. Your article gives the real picture of the inhuman activities of fundamentalists in Orissa. Though we were worried and anxious to know the real situation of our Brothers and sisters over there,we could not. The violence that is exhibited cannot be justified by any reasons.

We can’t call them humans. It is painful to know the sufferings inflicted on the innocent people. I strongly condemn the inhuman activities of fundamentalists and the callous attitude of police and the government officials. How can they take the law in their own hand? Now is the time for us to act.

Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ.,and Martis B, Moodubelle, are showing us some directions, let us join them and march forward to stand for Truth and JUSTICE. Let us witness Christ our Lord in the way of Peace and Love. Dear readers please e-mail this article to your friends all over the World.Let us pray for our Brethren in the words of our Saviuor- "Father I ask you to protect them from the evil one. They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.Sanctify them in the truth...". Jn,17:15b-17.

I am really shocked at the inhuman behaviour and the activities of the fundamentalists without knowing the reality. Itlooks that the BJP, VHP, Bhajarang Dal and RSS have got an hidden agenda and made a firm resolution to work systamatically the work of demolishing all the Christian institutions and churches at Orissa.

This is very well proved in their meeting held in Rourkela on 24th August- reported by a police who went in civil dress to the meeting. When all these attrocities are taking place to the christians, where are the police and the government officials? it looks they too have joined their hands in this 'Brave Act'.

I plead the christians not to lose hope. Be strong in your faith. we are with you. When God is with us, who is against us?

I wholeheartedly agree with the views expressed by Martis, in communicating with international organisations. merely writing, however, would not do. These groups get a majority of their funds from the United States, and to a certain extent, from canada and UK. These groups have plenty of supporters there whose primary work is to legitimise their agenda by creating 'front' orgsanisations to spread their ideology and also collect funds (IDRF is an example).

They run quite a few hate websites which are very extreme in nature and also have a 'hit-list' of people. Almost all of these sites are run in the US It is high time we alerted organisations in the US and other countries and expose them in front of the authorities in these countries so that they're are categorised as terrorist organisations, their funds freezed, and supporters kept under surveillance. We can do it folks, all we need is the will .

Sang Parivar activists are COWARDS and they cannot fight against Naxalites or Maoists. Their Swamy along with other VHP activists were killed by Naxalites. The electronic media, mostly the TV channels, are controlled by Sang Parivar sympathisers and they are siding with the fanatic Hindu Groups. No political party is supporting the helpless Christians as they are not a "vote bank". I have lost faith in Indian Democracy and secularism.

When millions of Hindus are living in Western and Christian countries, with thousands of their temples and places of worship without any fear or tension, we Christians are living in fear in our own country. Not a single temple is destroyed in the above countries and Hindus are leading a very happy and prosperous life there. In fact the top positions (jobs) in these countries (including the Gulf countries) are held by Hindus.

There are no anti-conversion laws and many Hindu scholars are openly preaching their religion everywhere. No one is attacking them or their followers. It is a pity that we Indians are boasting about secularism and our great culture, but the reality is quite different. Sang Parivar, with the direct support of BJP, is destroying our country. They want their leader, Mr. LK Advani (who was the mastermind of Babri Masjid destruction), to be the next PM of our country! Just imagine what will happen to our country if this super fanatic becomes the PM.

Disgusting! BJP is a party which is fishing in troubled waters. Just see the situation in Jammu and Kashmir. The recent Bomb blasts in Bangalore, Jaipur, Ahmedabad etc are due to the result of injustice done to Muslims in dfferent parts of the country.

There is no secularism in our country. The Saffron Brigade is trying to wipe out Islam and Christianity from our country. But God is with us. We have survived for more than 2000 years. We will win. We will defeat the Fanatic Hindu groups and the fanatic Hindu groups will perish.

It is really heart throbbing to see the live report of the vhp's attrocities in Orissa, targetting the innocent christians religious and nuns. The Land of India is of us all, for we all are born and bred in the Indian soil and we have love for our country and hence our missionaries and priests and religious started educational institutions and orphanages and clinics and hospitals to serve all mankind especially the poor and marginalized.

Is this service of the christians affecting adversely to the vhps? Then why are they bent upon to distroy the churches and convents orphanages and clinics and hospitals? Yes, they know not what they are doing. Lord Jesus forgive them and let the vhp get enlightenment like Saul and become Paul at least in the 2000 birth centenary of St.Paul.

It's heartening to read what is happening to Humanity. Why do few sections of society react without confirming the truth about the culprits involved in this killing. Why should the innocent be punished n killed. Will Swamiji come back to life if Christians are killed and catholic Institutions attcaked? There has been and still there is a wrong perception about Catholic Missioneries working in back ward areas.

Just because our catholic missionries sacrifice so much n bring about a smile on the faces of thousands of unfortunate poor people, why should it termed as conversion at all?? If we look at things more closely, why do most Hindu brothern prefer a Catholic Educational Institution for their children's Education then?? Why bcoz other than just academics we chritians are known for our human values & humane qualities.

These qualities are passed on to the younger generation to be better people in life. Does this then mean we are forcing them to be catholics?? Being a Catholic I visit temples so often, does that mean I am going to be converted... Let's all understand that we are human beings first & Religion later that we have started it all. & lets end it all in good spirit & save humanity than religion. Eula

I strongly condemn this mayhem by the vhp. Every citizen of a civilized society should condemn this aastardly act of the VHP. Given the history of VHP, it can be safely concluded that it is the biggest threat to the security and secular fabric of the country. Hence, needs to be banned. Earlier the RSS killed the Father of the Nation. Then they went on massacring thousands of Muslims.

In 1991, Advani presided over the carnage in the Babri Masjid demolition drive sheerly because of his lust for power. After Orissa burnt alive its saviour Graham Steines and his two innocent little sons, Narendra Modi went a step ahead in 2001 by organizing a carnage of innocent Muslims in Gujarat - state-sponsored terrorism, using unemployed goodas of Bajrang dal & VHP. It was a shameless act of cowardice and hatred, both on the part of Modi & RSS through its loonies. Christians have been the soft targets of the nefarious designs of these fanatics. Though their overt and unfounded grouse is 'conversions bogie', their actual irritant is that the scheduled castes and tribals and the poor people are educated by the Christian missionaries, leaving the exploiting castes like the brahmins to make them bend their backs and work hard for their survival. With educated poor people around, how could these manu-vadis exploit the poorer castes and classes? If Christians are really involved in forced conversions, the sanghis should democratically & judicially sort out the matter.

But why there has been no case of litigations regarding this "conversion bogie" so far? The said swami was a fanatic - who incited people against minorities (a common devise for cheap popularity, these days) and also poorer people. Naturally he attracted the ire of Maoists, who feel deprived by oppressive upper classes. Police have stated that the killing of the swami was the handiwork of Maoists, and Christians have nothing to do with that. If so, how did the RSS loonies come to the conclusion that the Christians killed their swami? Why did they not file a case and seek justice, and in stead took law into their hands and indulged in vandalism and genocide? This was the exact model of action they worked in Gujarat.

I am ashamed of these anti-national elements who shed blood at will and bring disrepute to the nation. I am ashamed of the BJP -the shameless power-monger- who use these terrorist outfits to stir people's emotions to garner votes. During Christmas 2007, they destroyed many a church and prayer hall in Orissa. Since the Government is theirs and is impotent, they think they could do anything. Unfortunately, Navin Patnaik has no conscience he has only lust for power! Earlier when the tribals were dying due to starvation, eating some poisonous roots, he termed it "tribla delicacy!" He should resign. UPA Government should have dismissed such an anti-people chief minister who brings bad name to the country. But UPA is more worried about its electoral gains.

    Wed, Aug 27 2008

St. Joseph's College, Bangalore NOTICE TO ALL CLASSES: ATTACK ON SECULARISM: MURDER OF PLURALISM IN ORISSA What we have witnessed in the last few days in Orissa is an attack on the secular fabric of the nation. Places of worship have been torched, human beings have been killed, secular institutions of education, primary health care, orphanages and social centers managed by the Christian community have been set on fire. Society has been divided on the basis of religion. The Christian minority community has been made insecure in the state. In the process, the secular image of India has received a beating.

The violence that is exhibited cannot be justified by any reasons. It is the law of the jungle that is prevailing in the state. Damage has been done to Indian society and polity by these bouts of sectarian violence. In the absence of the pro-activeness of the state, lumpen elements have a field day. The criminals must be brought to justice. Those causing mayhem should be restrained. As citizens of secular India, we cannot remain silent.

Silence on the issue can make all of us cowards and cause further damage to the secular fabric of the nation. All of us have a responsibility to protect the Indian Constitution premised on the tenets of secularism and pluralism. Such violence is simply unacceptable from whichever quarter.

As a mark of solidarity with the victims of violence and as a commitment to secular India, the college will remain closed on Friday, 29th August 2008 in response to the call given by the Catholic Bishops Conference of India. To make up for the day, regular classes will be held on 10th October 2008 and classes will close only on 11th October for revision. Thanking you Dr. (Fr.) Ambrose Pinto SJ Principal

The christian community is attached and their property looted and destroyed, just because they are christians and wrongly accused.

May God forgive them. May God also give strength & courage to all the people affected to bear the suffering they endure. Lord JESUS has some comforting words for them: "Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you (falsely) because of me. Dear Mr. Anil, Thanks for your comments. I am a Christian and always consider Hindus in my country as brothers and we specially Mangaloreans always live in harmony and do not have any ill feeling towards our Hindu brethren.

Have you ever met any Christian Mangalorean who hated Hindus? I doubt very much unless he is not a true Christian. I have a lot of friends in U.A.E. who are Hindus and we don’t even think that we are belonging to different religions. Coming back to Hindu’s shot dead in Kandhamal District, please re-read the article from Fr. Pious and this quote “ On Saturday, August 23rd, Swami Laxanananda Saraswati along with five other people was shot dead in his Jalaspeta Ashram near Tumudibandha (Kandhamal District, Orissa).

“ Secondly you are referring to Gujarat problem, on what ground you are saying the Christian’s attacked Hindus?? First of all get to the facts and then please comment.

I was in many Missionary stations where Christian Missionaries toil day and night to support our Hindu brotheren, esp in the north where Hindu leaders hardly look at their people’s condition, their poverty or education. It is the Christian prients and nuns who supports them, feed them, cloth and educate them. I have never seen any conversion takes place in these missionary stations. I suggest you to visit one of these stations and learn yourself who doing what.

Finally your reference to Mohammed Ghori, Mohammed Ghasni is nothing to do with modern democratic India. It was the age of emperors and wars and was not ruled by people of India. I would like to close this comments saying that we Christians are never against our Hindu brothers neither in the past or never be in future and I don’t think even any Christians in Orissa or Gujarat are against Hindus. It is the political mileage some leaders want to achieve on these issues.

Well said Mr.Pereira I must highlight that no where in the world do citizens or politicians of a nation mix religion with politics as much as we do in India as it can prove to be a deadly cocktail. People critisize Hitler and even parties like BJP do But do we know “Golwalkar", a founding member of the RSS, in a book that he wrote borrowed ideas from Hitler’s Nazism.

His admiration for Hitler was well-known. He rejected the idea that India was a secular nation, and preached instead that it was a Hindu Rashtra (a Hindu system), which unfortunately has a great of influence over much of the Indian population.”

But the people of this country fail to realize that with this mindset and attitude this nation may not go far as we all know what happend to Germany and Hitler in the end. "Those who live by the sword die by the sword". Jai Hind!

I strongly condemn these attacks at the same time request the central government to ban VHP, Bajrang Dal as they are a fascist - NAZI organization If groups like SIMI, CPM (ML) can be banned why cannot the VHP , Bajrang DAL be banned? This is hypocricy on part of the central government and the judiciary.

A strong signal needs to be sent out to these blood thirsty religous fanatics if ever there has to be peace & prosperity in India.A nation CANNOT PROGRESS as long as these FANATIC, RADICAL organizations are involved in politics and take law in their own hand. These attacks are very well orchestrated by the BJP who are fond of minority bashing for the sake of votes.

The BJP and its fascists groups are making false allegations and carrying out attacks against the Christians in Orissa inspite knowing well that it were the Maoists who killed their swami . My question to the Central government

    1. When Hindu organizations are involved in such terrorism activities no one says a word but when a Muslim is involved in terrorist activity their entire community is targetted. The SIMI & CPM ML is banned. Why is'nt the VHP & Bajarang Dal banned? To BJP

    2. If you call yourself a nationalist party then why are you killing people of your own nation?. To Congress

    3. You are seen visiting the minorities only during elections.why is it that you are not doing anything to protect them now? Where is Rahul baba, Manmohan singh and your Home Minister now? To my Hindu brethen

4.How would you have reacted or felt if your temples were burnt down or destroyed in places Europe, America oor the Gulf and your sanyasinis raped? 3 Quick fixes:

    1. - rioters of any religion/persuasion should be SHOT in cold blood no matter whether they are 5 or 5000. They MUST die.

    2. ALL groupS that try to convert ppl to any religion should be BANNED if u want to do social service - do just that dont mix it with religion.

    3. Outlaws like naxals should be mass exterminated - killed in their thousands starting with their leaders.

Dear John Dsouza/Kiran Crasta, Are you supporting this organizations. you both are in favour. No good organization do organised crimes. they will never kill or burn women and children. or attack place of education. If any good organization has to protest it will raise petions and gather support for their cause. If you think these organizations are going to save christians if they stop conversion then I call you fools.

Because they will even kill you even if you counsume beef, practice any religion other than theirs. Ask them they will tell you. For my comments I will tell you a solution: Rather bending before the evil force try to face them because each human being has right to speak. Come up with strong support from around the world and show what this organizations are doing take matter to UNO. human rights come in action. We are not here to earn money. social responsiblity is also a part of life. Come all support this call we will fail intial but win is for sure. jai hind.

The Only solution prescribed by many commenters is for Christian Brothers and sisters to bow down and support the trouble makers (BJP, VHP) etc. Its funny to read this, Please do not take this silence of our Christian friends as their Weakness but its the right opposite.

We all were born in India and will Die here Insha Allah. About the killing of the Swamiji, Unfortunately in India you are guilty until proven not guilty. The Naxals have claimed responsibility and there are some ignorant commentators here saying that, they should not retaliate for killing the Swamiji, which directly implies that it was christians who did it, What a malice.

Lets hope that all communities focus on educating their people like our Christian Bretheren, Finally shame on some people who change their names and identity and comment. For rest of my Country men, "LOVE THY NEIGHBOURS"

It is high time we christians spend enough time in prayer & penance. We have to follow Jesus Christ totally & not partially. Prayer alone can set everything in order & not protests or rallies. We have to be true witnesses of Christ.By being true witnesses alone, we can make any person or religion to look up to us. Yes indeed in Indian Muslims and Christians are unsecure. After the demolition of Babri masjid there were so many communal riots. In these riots muslims lost their lives and properties. Now their turn is towards Christians. The facist forces wants to make muslims nad Christians insecure, so everyday they deliberately create some issue against these two communities.

In every part of India they are attacking these two communities. In 2002 these facist forces killed thousands of muslims in Gujarat. Even they burnt a Christian missionary and his son alive in orissa. And the accused are boasting on their devil work.

If we visit some fascist sites we can find so many things which only spread enemity between the communities of India. If the same thing continous in India there will be more bloodshed in coming days. The facist forces  and other groups should be banned. These groups only spread hatred between the people. Indian government should take a bold step on banning these anti-human groups. Otherwise there will be retaliation from the oppressed communities which will make India a land of war.

Christians, can we think what's happening to us in India even though most of the people in India are getting benefitted from our services be it like education, hospital services & social services. But still why we have been targetted?? Let me tell you we have some groups within christians like New life. They are converting people by paying money, so all of others watch us red faced due to this menace. Conversions should be stopped as we have much independence in Hindu dominated India we should not mis use this, we can't get this type of independence either in Saudi Arabia or other Gulf countries or other muslim dominated countries.

We have examples what happened to south korean missonaries in Afghanistan???? what'z happening in Lebanon?? So I kindly request all our fellow christians to support Hindus cause as they have been targetted in India due to Congress parties mis adventure, also I request all our christians to support BJP so that we will be safe at least under BJP.

What these fundamentalist forces are forgetting is that their inhuman acts of violence are going to create more naxalism and terrorism. Can we all come to one table and address the issues with sincerety and trust? The nation must come first issue of religion, tribe and caste are secondary.

The only solution to secure christians in India at the present political scenario is, all christians should vote for Patriotic BJP. Since most of christians don't vote for BJP & Shiv Sena, they look at us as if we are against hindus. The congress (sinking ship in india) can't defend anyone in India except muslims as they constitute their major votebank. Let us consider Sikhs, they are safe since they are supporters of BJP. Recently there were clashes in punjab on Dera Sachha soudha but nothing like this happened ,also no politican dared to comment. Also consider small groups of Jews in mumbai & Uttarakhand they are safe as they support Shiv Sena & BJP. So why not christians think , we should support BJP to make ourself secure & our properties.

It is nothing but non acceptance by the higher caste people when the downtrodden are living like human being with the help of Christian missionaries. Education, hope given to these downtrodden by the sacrifice of Christian missionaries is become painful to the so called higher caste. The only way to divert people's mind is by driving them from the true reality.

The presence of missionaries is a obstacle to have control on these downtrodden. The slaying of Swamy should be condemned by all walks of life. The area is actively involved by Maoist. Prevention is better than cure. Why such prominent member is not protected by the police and as well l as by the volunteers ? Aftermath of slaying of Swamy, what these Sangh Parivar has done shows their culture of functioning.

Christianity always spread due to the sacrifice of the missionaries who are setting example of Jesus Christ by laying their life for others. It is pathetic to know that the State Government which boas to protect the downtrodden has failed completely. Request the Central Government to sack it immediately.
