Mangalore, Aug 27: Writer, journalist, teacher and successful organiser K T Sridhar(68), who had meritoriously served the cause of the Kannada theatre and neo literature revolution of Kasargod district, passed away on Monday, August 25 at a hospital in Kasargod.

He had been admitted to a hospital in Kasargod, where he was residing, after he complained of chest pain. He did not respond to treatments and breathed his last at about 11 pm on Monday. Sridhar is survived by wife, a son and two daughters.

He had been teaching social science in the BEM Highschool, Kasargod besides serving as Kasargod district representative of Udayvani daily for about 20 years. He was a member of Punjakody Taravadu in Talangare and was living at Talangare Khasi Lane. He also ran a firm named Sarita Publicity.

Sridhar, who was active in neo literature and theatre activities, had created a sensation in the theatre, both at Kasargod and coastal Karnataka, after introducing a play titled 'Bacchali Hudugaru' to the stage. He had also brought out a collection of short stories titled 'Teerta Yatre' while other plays he authoured included 'Rashtreeya Heddariya Divisionnalli Savu', based on a short story by renowned story writer Na D'Souza and 'Balance Sheet'.

A seminar on 'Samskara', a novel written by Dr U R Anantmurthy held at Kasargod in association with Gangadhar Bhat in the past, had succeeded in catapulting his fame to the national level. Sridhar was one of the few who rejuvenated the amateur theatre at Kasargod. He also deserves full credit for making efforts, alongwith a few others, in activating the childrens' theatre there.

He had been involved with the theatre activities of studens since 1971, and after undergoing theatrical training alongwith Venugopal Kasargod at Trissur, had founded an organisationd fully devoted to stage activities named 'Yavanika'.

The late journalist had provided impetus for many talented people to prosper. He had founded  the Navya Sahitya Sangha through which a review of stories authoured by Yaswant Chittala was published. He translated a few stories from Malayalam to Kannada, and a book titled 'Sandarshana', a collection of interviews, is ready to be published.

Sridhar had worked as the secretary of Kasargod Distict Kannada Writers Association and his dream of getting involved with a newly formed team named 'Nudi Balaga' for spreading awareness about Kannada language, was about to be realised when he expired.

Kerala Border Area unit of Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Kasargod District Kannada Writers Association, Geeta Vihara, Yavanika, Border Area Artistes, Apoorva Kalavidaru, Kerala Tulu Academy, Rangachinnari, Karavali Cultural Foundation, Kasargod District Photographers Association Kasargod Unit, theatre activist Kasargod Chinna etc., have condoled the death of K T Sridhar, an eminent personality who served the cause of Kannada language and culture till his last breath.

I really sensed a feel of personal loss when i heard that senior journalist KT is no more. He had been one of my guiding spirits during my initial days in Kannada Journalism. I have vivid memories of him as a correspondent of Udayavani then. He had equal respect for other journalists in the press fraternity, whichever journal they may be representing.

A little of what I know today about ethics in the fields of journalism and theatre, I owe much of it to him (and not to forget K. T. Venugopal) who together, created a sort of revolution on Kannada Theater. We must be proud that our southern soil is blessed with such eminent journalists of international caliber. At the same time I am sad that, at times we fail to recognize their potential and their zeal to be different from others.

Can we not join hands and create something in KT’s honour as a long lasting tribute for the legacy he has left behind. I wish to share an anecdote here – my close friend Late Mick Max, who was working as sub – editor for ‘Navabharata’ daily then, would tickle Sridharanna whenever they met saying – KT, Eee Kade Banni Ullaala nadi daati’ – in effect he was coaxing the other to change sides from Udayavani to Navabharata. Today both of them have changed sides, and I am sure they must be enjoying a good company, up over there. I share my personal grief with his wife and children and the members of his family.
