Udupi: 10 cows die on consuming leaves of rubber trees cut by MESCOM

Udupi, Apr 4: An act of irresponsibility of MESCOM department resulted in death of 10 cows. This incident is reported from Hadubidda Jeddu near Hiliyana Hebbagilu Mane under Avarse gram panchayat limits near here.

Owners of a private rubber plantation have grown rubber plants on a farm here. An electric line passes through a certain rubber plantation. MESCOM staff cut off the branches of a few rubber trees touching the electric line, but did not remove the cut branches. Cows who ate the leaves of the cut trees died of food poisoning.

A pregnant cow belonging to Sumalatha of Hiliyana and three cows belonging to Puttaiah Naik died instantly. Cows belonging to Surendra Shetty and Karunakar Shetty are in critical condition. The owners of these cows had bought them for dairy farming after obtaining a loan from the bank. Now, owing to negligence of the MESCOM department, they are faced with a difficult situation on hand.

Locals have urged the concerned authorities to take immediate action in this regard.
