Mangalore, Aug 28: Daytime loot in the Mumbai-Mangalore Matysagandha Express has taken its toll yet again with a brother-sister duo travelling from the metro being drugged and robbed of Rs 1 lac after consuming a soft drink laced with sedatives on Thursday August 28.

The victims have been identified as Shakuntala Shetty and her brother Shekhar Shetty. The two were found unconscious after the train reached Mangalore central railway station on Thursday afternoon. They have been admitted to Wenlock Hospital in the city.

Fellow passengers informed the railway police on finding the two unconscious. On gaining consciousness, the victims said that they were to get down at Mulky railway station as their destination was Kinnigoli. They had gotten friendly with four youths traveling with them who then offered them a soft drink. After drinking it, Shakuntala and Shekhar lost consciousness and don't know what happened thereafter.

A similar incident occurred in the same train just eight days ago. Chandra Naik from Karkala, and Narayanan from Udinoor, Kasargod, were robbed in the train, after consuming sedatives in a similar manner.

This is the third such incident reported in the city over the past two months. Some train passengers have suggested that there should be a highly visible notice in every compartment cautioning travellers against accepting food or drinks from strangers. Also, it is surprising that, so far, none of the culprits have been nabbed by the railway police. No serious efforts have been made by the railways to stop and prevent such  crimes, whether through warnings or actions.

It is quite evident from the fact that there is hand in glove with the railway authorities.

I still remember an unfortunate incident happened to my friend here whose brother was travelling from Mangalore to Mumbai in Matsyagadha, and after Kundapur station, he had interaction with the thieves, and they were trying to snatch his handbag, with the result he was thrown out of the train. And he badly hurt to his spine and head and was hospitalized for a very very long time.  The incident happened about three years before, and he is still bed ridden – and paralyzed below waist. This young man has lost his life - such incidents have been happening every now and then, but still the culprits are free and strike at their will, and RPF seems to be still sleeping.

They will take action, and apprehend these thugs only when some VIPs involved in the incident. Of course, the VIPs are moving around with their bodyguards - and definitely will not travel on General Bogey. God save us!!

It is unfortunate that even after a couple of similar incidences occuring on Matsyagandha with common modus operandi, the culprits are still at large to loot some more hapless passengers. I feel pity for the security provided by the railways on the train to poor passengers.

Many a times our family members travel unescorted, about which we have to think twice henceforth. Will the railway police please take note of this and resort to remedial measures, so that a common man can travel without any fear and confidently.

It is very shocking incident and unfortunately railways failed to tackle such issues. Now railways should come up immediately with close circuit cameras in every train and every ticket booking person should be photographed at counter and kept their picture in railway records. It will help in investigations as such things adapted in foreign countries. Please present this demand to Railways & Government through your web site and press media.

This modus operandi of feeding laced food items to unwary passengers, which is quite old, is now being used frequently to loot innocent and elderly passengers on the Matsyagandha Express too. There is no doubt that the law enforcers and TCs are well aware of this and turn a Nelson's eye as their hands are handsomely greased.

Some time ago there was a report in your website that the laced drink was bought by the passengers from a cold drink vendor, which means that even the vendors are hand in glove with these mercenaries of death and there is well organized gang operating impunitively on this route. It is high time that the higher authorities wake up and take the gangs to task by tightening the screws of their subordinates! In fact, it has become extremely dangerous for women and the elderly to travel on this train unescorted as they can easily fall prey to glib talk used by these marauders.

Money and material aside, there is a good chance of the victims going into a long coma or even succumbing to the sedative because of overdosage or an anaphylatic shock. In such a case, the Indian Railways should be made liable to pay a heavy compensation to the next of kin of victims involved. It's indeed a sorry state of affairs and needs to be addressed urgently with a firm hand!! Hope those in power understand the tribulations of the poor traveler and take remedial action by booking the culprits at the earliest.

In the first place such henious crimes are a non-issue and of less media value & attention . Moreover, With the 'lathi' technology of our police force & intelligence of an idiot, and with very little time to spare for any sort of investigations (busy serving our corrupt political masters & criminals), what else! could a law abiding common citizen expect. "More insecurity & more such incidents".
