Washington: US State Dept Refuses to Grant Visa to Narendra Modi

PTI

Washington, Aug 30: United States has confirmed in a letter to Congresswoman Betty McCollum that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will not be granted a visa to attend the World Gujarati Conference that is being held in New Jersey this weekend, the Coalition Against Genocide (CAG) has said.

On July eight, the Democratic law maker petitioned the State department against issuing a visa for Modi and a reply to this was sent by Mathew Reynolds, the Assistant secretary of State for Legislative Affairs.

"The Department of State is extremely sensitive to your concerns and we are cognizant of the human rights abuses Modi has committed," Reynolds has said in his reply that has been circulated by the CAG, a diverse spectrum of groups and individuals in the US and Canada that have come together in response to the Gujarat 2002 riots to demand justice.

"We have thoroughly searched Department records and located no current non-immigrant visa applications for Modi. However, should we receive an application, we assure you it will be adjudicated in strict accordance with the Immigration and Naturalisation Act," the official said.

Commenting on the letter, Hyder Khan of the CAG said "the current response from the State Department has virtually made Narendra Modi a persona non grata to the US."

It has been pointed out that about 32 lawmakers have so far written letters to the State Department expressing concern over human rights abuses in Gujarat and urging the denial of US visa to Modi, the CAG said in a media release.

"By persistently inviting the most notorious human rights abuser in India and propping Narendra Modi as their icon and hero, the organisers of the World Gujarati conference have brought shame to the Indian American community and have tarnished the name of India," said Hari Sharma.

CAG is a specially propped up so called US based sleepy organisation in collusion with the tainted and infamous Teesta Setalvad in India and Anjana Chatterjee, US agent who will do anything for money and has been blasphemed in US due to her links with another tainted and now jailed Pakistani agent in USA - Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai. One can understand the gravity and intent of this CAG, which is just quoted to tarnish Modi with its innocuous looking fancy NAME but indulging in unsocial work. Unfortunate that USA nurtures such characters in her backyard.

Nothing wrong in Modi bashing. What is wrong is double standard of the some people commented here and trying to portrait some relgion in bad way. Hope these people remember Hitler,Milosevic and many more world's worst criminals are belong to same community. So dont blame a community. It is individuals who do right or wrong. I am amused to see the response hailing Modi's US visa rejection. Please note ,if Modi becomes PM ,US will not have any choice than offering him red carpet welcome. However,USA does not have right to give human right certificate as they are also culprits in Iraq and elswhere.

I am amused also to hear one of you saying we also hate Bush and he is not liked by our own community. Then try him also in international court of Justice. will you? No, you may invite him to Orissa...

Mr.Venu Bhandary, just make a sincere effort to invite MODI to Oman, where you stay. See the reaction from OMAN GOVERNMENT. Then comment about your Modi. No man kind will forgive Modi for his cruelty. "MODI, BUSH, SADDAM, HITLER" are on the same line. Mr. Pramod/USA, Don't think that Muslim brothers will favour your comments. Do you think that, 1) Christians are justifying killing innocent muslims in Gujarat? Never. 2) Christians also against BUSH for killing innocent civilians in IRAQ. Don't hold responsible entire USA (Remember that you are also US citizen) for the causes of BUSH. Don't backstab your nation. Think before you comment.

The only reason Modi did not apply for a visa(he had been rejected once before)is that he was waiting for an official anouncement from the US if they would grant him a visa before he applied. The US has a take a right decision in sending a message to politicians and their supporters who harass or are biased towards people of other religions, in this case Muslims and Christians.

For those Hindus in the US who are championing Modi's cause, how would they feel if they were picked on by the whites as brown skinned Hindu immigrants? I am very sure they must have encountered numerous cases where they have personally been picked on.

This news will be a celebrating matter to those anti Modi community or else nothing. "Is this a heaven named as America?".This visa denial is a failure of that organisational relationships of that particular organisation with that government.

Mr.Modi is a leader with a wide vision and it will take some time to recognize him and the day will come when nation will salute him. If anybody measures capacity of Mr.Modi based on 2002 riots is their foolishness. If they really interested to analyse him see the statistics how long it took to crack down the recent Terror network after Ahmedabad blasts.

We all witnessed so many terror attacks in different states, but nobody could do any thing. There were police, intelligence equally present in all the states. US needs somebody like manmohan singh to implement what it wants. This event is a forecast of that day when US president will face a refusal of Visit visa by the Indian Government and the celebration will be massive.

(1)First of all MODI never applied for VISA. It is just US said if he applies it would be rejected. Looks like people are misinformed

(2)Modi is democratically elected CM with 2/3rd majority. Gujarathi people thought he is better off compraed to others. So it is stupidity to question judgement of people of Gujarath. By the way he is the most developmental oriented CM. India needs people like him

(3)If MODI denied Visa, then GEORGE BUSH also should be denied visa. He was responsible of killing of lakhs of Iraqis in the name of WMD. Indian law takes it own course to bring justice. So dont think he is criminal just because u think so.

The US has a long history of supporting, codling, and or tolerating dictators and despots in the middle-east and elsewhere for their own self interests. It is fiercely democratic within its borders. But when it comes to its foreign policy, its self interests reign supreme. Modi was denied the visa just to please some muslim groups within the US. If sometime in the future, we were to find huge oil reserves in Gujarath, Modi would be given a red carpet welcome to the US and will be hailed as a protector of hindus. Anyway, he addressed the US conference live via a video feed last time. He'll probably do the same this time.

AUSTIN D'SOUZA- how can modi be a terrorist? he is the elected representative of the Indian people. He has won 4 times as a CM. He won twice consequently, that too after the godhara massacre. If he was indeed a criminal as noted by many of you, why did the Gujraati muslims vote him back to power? That too twice continuosly? ...

Well the answer is that Gujajrat people have forgotten the past. They don't see any point in dragging the episode again and again. It is this fact ,that has made Gujarat to be the No 1 state in the country. You see the roads, infrastructure of Gujrat. Then you comment! I sincerely appreciate the Gujarati muslims for voting Modi back to power inspite of their brothers spread across the world continuosly been criticising Modi.

Even Guajrat muslims regret the killings of inncoent Ayodhya piligrims. sadly no secular minded people speak for the sake of those dead 58 piligrims .Such double standards will fetch sympathy votes for Modi to be CM for a long long time
