Kundapur: Sexual harassment of minor - man gets five years imprisonment

Kundapur, Apr 15: A person facing charges of sexually harassing a nine-year-old, has been handed down sentence in the form of five years imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000. The district special court for Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act delivered judgement relating to this case recently.

The man who was held guilty in the case happens to be Sathish Naik (26), resident of Belve village in the taluk.

Naik had been accused of forcibly taking away a girl student of a school who was walking towards her home on January 6, 2014, and meting out sexual harassment to her. A case about this incident had been filed in Shankarnarayana police station.The then police circle inspector of the town police station here, P M Diwakar, had conducted investigation and filed charge sheet in the court. The court, which examined 12 witnesses in the case, pronounced judgement on April 12.

The court, holding Naik guilty of the charges, imposed a year of jail term and Rs 2,000 fine under section 354 of Indian Penal Code (IPC), a year of imprisonment and Rs 2,000 fine under section 506 of IPC, and three years jail term and Rs 6,000 fine under POCSO Act. Judge of the court, T Venkatesh Naik, directed for disbursal of Rs 5,000 out of this fine to the victim.

Special public prosecutor, Vijaya Vasu Poojary, had presented arguments in the case on behalf of the prosecution.
