Oman, Apr 24: Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP) led by Team-26 recently conducted an exciting 'Annual Badminton Tournament' at the recreation centre of the Royal Hospital.
The huge popularity of the game ensured a large gathering of members and their families creating an electrifying atmosphere. Young as well as elders of the community competed with each other with tremendous enthusiasm and vigour with a true spirit of sportsmanship.
The tournament was divided into five categories, Mixed Doubles being introduced for the first time. The categories were, Boys Doubles, Girls Doubles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The tournament saw an overwhelming response with a total registration of 27 teams. The members were asked to pre-register themselves on the MCCP website and Vijay Dcunha ensured that all the participants’ names were well tabulated for quick and smooth conducting of the matches.
Dolly Gomes an ardent supporter of MCCP and lover of sports took over the reins of conducting the matches, firstly by drawing lots in each category and then ensuring the sequence of matches in the two badminton courts were made available for the tournament.
Committee member, Sam Suneel Menezes was instrumental for all the arrangements at the venue and sports secretary, Terence D’Souza was master of ceremonies for the whole event. They were well supported by other committee members namely, Michael Goveas, Naveen Mascarehnas, Jane Castelino, Francis Pinto, Vijai D’Cunha, Dynet Fernandes and Philomena Saldanha.
The programme commenced at 8.00 am with registration and breakfast for everyone. The matches commenced after the opening prayer by Naveen Mascarehnas and welcome address by the president Sunil Furtado. Deepak Vadigere and Gururaj B were the match referees.

Boys Doubles:
Winner: Lester D’Souza and Andril Lobo
Runner up: Lael Alva and Shawn Menezes
Girls Doubles:
Winner: Calida Machado and Christine Danti
Runner up: Rochelle Quodras and Amanda D’Costa
Men’s Doubles:
Winner: Jackson Mendonca and Glen Monis
Runner up: Praveen Lewis and Ovin Lewis
Women’s Doubles:
Winner: Jeevitha Vaz and Hendrita Colaco
Runner up: Flavia D’Souza and Dorine Robero
Mixed Doubles:
Winner: Ajith D’Costa and Reshma D’Costa
Runner up: Anil D’Mello and Preethi D’Mello
The cultural secretary, Dynet Fernandes proposed the vote of thanks and the winners were presented with beautiful trophies by the president and the executive committee members. Winners of the annual drawing competition held on February 16 were also felicitated.
MCCP executive committee were indebted to the participants and sponsors for their wholehearted support toward the tournament that made it a memorable event.
