Kolkata, Apr 26 (IANS): Nearly 910 kg of 'ganja' (cannabis) has been seized from Guwahati in Assam and two persons have been arrested, an official said on Wednesday.
Acting on a tip, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) halted a truck at Khanapara and found 44 packets of ganja weighing 907.95 kg concealed in a makeshift chamber constructed on the top of the body of the truck, the official said.
"The drivers of the vehicle, Sathai Mog and Rajesh Chandra Deb of Tripura, were arrested and remanded to judicial custody," the DRI official said.
Preliminary investigation suggested the seized 'ganja' was sourced from Tripura and destined for Bihar.
The agency recently seized about 1,520 kg of 'ganja' from Guwahati and arrested four persons.
Also on Wednesday, the DRI seized Rs 1.55 crore worth of cigarettes smuggled into India from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the guise of facial tissue papers at Haldia port in West Bengal.
"A total of 15,40,000 pieces of foreign origin cigarettes packed in 110 cartons recovered and these were smuggled into the country under concealment of 150 cartons of facial tissue papers," the official added.
