Guj speaker calls Ambedkar, PM Modi 'brahmins'; BJP MP says remarks to hurt party

Gandhinagar, Apr 30 (Deccan Chronicle): Gujarat Assembly Speaker Rajendra Trivedi on Sunday kicked off a controversy when he described Dalit icon BR Ambedkar as a Brahmin.

Speaking at the 'Mega Brahmin Business Summit' in Gandhinagar, Trivedi contended, “There is nothing wrong in calling a learned person a Brahmin.”

"I have no hesitation in saying that BR Ambedkar is a Brahmin. There is nothing wrong with calling a learned person a Brahmin. In that context, I will say that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also a Brahmin," Gujarat Assembly speaker said ANI.

Going a step further, Trivedi said Lord Rama was a Kshtriya and Krishna was an OBC (Other Backward Caste).

Trivedi’s comments met criticisms from some in the ruling BJP.

BJP parliamentarian Udit Raj slammed Trivedi over his remarks. A report in News18 quoted him as saying, "The remarks are objectionable and undesirable. He (Trivedi) doesn't realise that he is causing irreparable damage to the party with such statements.”

On Sunday, a group of Dalits in Gujarat's Una reportedly converted to Buddhism. They claimed that they took the decision as they were not considered as Hindus and were not allowed to enter temples.

Terming the mass conversion of Dalits to Buddhism as a "dangerous situation," Udit Raj cited "social injustice" as the prime reason.

"The reason is social injustice. Dalits are beaten up for even having a moustache. I do not know what alternative they have. This is really a dangerous situation," he said.

Earlier on March 1, a similar incident came to light in Karnataka's Kalburagi district, where over 60 Dalit families converted to Buddhism.

    BJP indulging in caste politics. Even in MP constable recruits were stamped SC or ST on their chests. Shame on BJP government in MP. Shame on Modi government at centre.

    Comedy unlimited in BJP sarkar.
    Though conversion is one's own choice, do not blame it on Muslims and Christians.
    But if the affairs are like this, majority will loose the tag of majority sooner or later.

    Yes, Trivedi doesn't realise that he is causing irreparable damage to the party with such statements. The present ruling party too has done the same. Its hereditary, it obviously seems.

    Brahmana means the one who has knowledge. It is not a caste. A person can not become brahmana if he is born to a brahmana father. He has to gain knowledge to become brahmana. Vyasa who is considered as avatara of Krishna was born to a fisher woman. Still he is a sage / muni / brahmana due to his knowledge and he is worshiped. As per hindu tradition, any person gain knowledge due to his hard work and tapas, must be respected and worshiped irrespective of his family in which he is born. Hence Ambedkar is a brahmana, a person filled with knowledge. He is leader for all sections of society, not just for Harijana/ Daliths.
    Unfortunately, today, money has more power than knowledge.

    @Shakuna,
    Is people born in other castes allowed to gain knowledge along with Brahmins inside a temple?

    @Shakuna,

    What is the logic in the sayings of this BJp speaker that human beings like BR Ambedkar and Modi are learned Brahmins; whereas Rama and Krishna who are Gods according to Hindu belief are non Brahmins (Non learned). Is it possible that human beings are more learned than Gods?

    @Shakuna,

    Even if the Brahmin means learned man, what is the need of dividing the society into categories of learned and non learned people?

    Even Asaram Bapu used to believe (he told it in the court) that he is a Brahmagyani and there is no sin on him even if he rapes.

    If learned men discriminate the non learned men just because the latter is a non learned man; then who according to you is a learned man?

    A Shudra is unfit of receive education. The upper varnas should not impart education or give advice to a Shudra.It is not necessary that the Shudra should know the laws and codes and hence need not be taught. Violators will go to as amrita hell. (Manu IV-78 to 81)

    Seriously Henry ? Do you really expect Feku to restrain such people ? On the contrary he will get a pat on the back saying, "Well done, keep it up, you will be promoted soon". In fact these guys have been making hate/divisive statements like lunatics over the last 4 years because they feel emboldened to do so knowing fully well no action will be taken against them. On the contrary a promotion will be in the offing. Whereas Mr. MSA made one badly timed statement during the Guj. elections from which Feku squeezed out maximum political mileage which probably tilted advantage to the Feku party. Where is the justice ? Where is the fairness ? They do and they get patted on the back and promoted. We do and people are suspended and elections lost. Wah, what justice !

    Henry bro,
    Feku and Daku are the fountain heads of communal hate and divisiveness. Others are just following their examples. Call a spade a spade. Upholding dignity of an office cannot be made an excuse for not speaking up against wrong doing. No one is above the law.
