Allahabad police chief shifted after lawyer, corporator's murders

Lucknow, May 11 (IANS): In wake of the murder of a corporator and a lawyer within three days, the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday transferred Allahabad police chief Akaash Kulhari and replaced him with Nitin Tiwari, an official spokesman said.

The transfer of Kulhari, who has now been attached to the Director General of Police's office here, came a day after lawyer Rajesh Srivastava was shot dead in Allahabad city, leading to his colleagues going on a flash strike in protest.

The Yogi Adityanath government was left red-faced by Srivastava's murder as it came while Chief Secretary Rajeev Kumar and Director General of Police O.P. Singh were in the city.

On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Pawan Kesari, who was considered close to Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, was shot dead in the Phulpur area.

Official records show that there have been 46 murders in the city in the past three months, puncturing the much-touted claim of the year-old BJP government of bringing back the law and order on track, after five years of chaos under the Samajwadi Party regime.
