Don't worry about exit polls, enjoy weekend: Siddaramaiah tells Congress workers

Bengaluru, May 13 (Deccan Chronicle): A day after exit polls hinted towards a hung assembly in Karnataka with BJP emerging as the largest single party followed by the Congress, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah asked Congress workers and supporters not to worry about the forecasts.

Terming the exit polls as “entertainment for the next 2 days”, Siddaramaiah on Sunday morning, in his tweets, asked the party workers to “enjoy your weekend” and said “we are coming back”.

Most exit polls have predicted a tight race between the two main rivals — BJP and Congress — in the Karnataka Assembly elections with JD(S) emerging as a likely kingmaker.

"Exit opinion polls are entertainment for the next 2 days. Relying on poll of polls is like a person who can't swim crossing a river on foot relying on a statistician who told him the average depth of the river is 4 feet. Please note average of 6+4+2 is 4. At 6 feet you drown!

So, Dear party workers, supporters & well wishers, don't worry about exit polls. Relax & enjoy your weekend. We are coming back," the Chief Minister said in his tweets.

On Saturday, Siddaramaiah exuded confidence that Congress party will come back to power with complete majority and will get over 120 seats.

222 out of 224 Karnataka Assembly constituencies voted on Saturday. Counting of votes and the announcement of results will take place on Tuesday, May 15.

If Congress wins then it is because of Siddharamaiah. And the Sonia Maino will show Karnataka that she is the real leader by appointing some other chela of hers. Good leaders are never recognized by Congress. That is how they rule and Karnataka will pay the price.

As has been the practice, no sooner did the voting end, the TV channels began to flash its own exit poll predictions.

India Today-Axis were the first to announce their predictions that gave the Congress an absolutely majority in the state, while placing the saffron party second. Then came the Times Now-VMR exit poll predictions that too showed the Congress in an advantageous position with more than 100 seats. The BJP, even by the Times Now’s predictions, was placed at second.

Times Now, often perceived to be a pro-government channel, posted a series of tweets in the run up to its broadcast of the exit polls all throughout the day. The images attached to the channel’s news flashes carried four prominent faces, that of, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BS Yeddyurappa from the BJP. Rahul Gandhi and the incumbent Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah represented the Congress party.
The channel’s on-air graphics changed spectacularly as soon as it became clear that the BJP was trailing behind Congress in the exit poll predictions. Soon, BJP President Amit Shah’s photo appeared opposite Rahul Gandhi and Modi’s image had vanished mysteriously.
There was another twist to Times Now’s coverage on exit polls. This was perhaps the first time a news channel had commissioned two exit polls. Soon after its exit poll predictions with VMR projected the Congress as the single largest party, the channel announced that it was going to broadcast another exit poll numbers. Its second exit poll, with Today’s Chanakya, later went on to give BJP 120 seats. Today’s Chanakya had projected 135-150 seats for the BJP in the Gujarat assembly polls last year. The BJP ended up winning just 99 seats.

It is fact that since 2014 EVM in state assembly elections only voting for BJP and bye-polls for Congress and other parties. The BJP which is short of majority in Rajya Sabha winning state is more important than losing Lok Sabha seat which will go to polls in less than one year.

All exit polls till this day have not given the true picture. Even two exit polls conducted by two different organizations vary. This is being witnessed in all general elections and assembly elections.

    The reasons given are many.
    •The sampling is not sufficient.
•The sampling do not cover all the divergent ones.
•The participating people are not truthful.
•The person's conducting the survey have their own priorities.
•The spephologists are unable to read the results and arrive at correct conclusions.

Since psephology is an unscientific science. There are more if and buts. In India because of the country not homogeneous with difference in languages, castes, communities, religion, regions etc., it is very difficult to predict unlike in western countries. Hence even Exit Polls only suggest the trend and not the actual results.

His confidence is both reassuring and infectious as far as Congress supporters are concerned. We believe him. Reputed India Today - Axis exit poll will turn out to be a winner.
