Govt working out on formula to bring down fuel prices, says Amit Shah

New Delhi, May 22 (Deccan Chronicle): With petrol and diesel prices touching record high, BJP national president Amit Shah on Tuesday said the government is taking the matter seriously and is working out on a formula to bring down the prices and ease the burden on consumers.

Addressing the media in Delhi, Amit Shah said, "Petroleum minister will have a meeting with the officials of the oil companies tomorrow (Wednesday). We are working out a formula to reduce the prices," he said.

Meanwhile, news agency PTI, citing a senior government official, reported that the administration is likely to come out with “some steps” this week to deal with rising fuel prices. The government may not rely only on cutting excise duty, which makes up for a fourth of the retail selling price, the official said without elaborating further.

“Rising fuel price is a crisis situation for government and it has to be handled with combination of steps. Finance ministry is consulting the petroleum ministry on rising crude prices,” he said.

More than a week after the state-owned oil firms ended a 19-day pre-Karnataka poll hiatus on revising fuel prices, petrol and diesel rates have touched record highs.

In last nine days, petrol price has risen by Rs 2.24 a litre and diesel by Rs 2.15.

The prices in Delhi are the cheapest among all metros and most state capitals.

Petrol price on Tuesday touched a record high of Rs 76.87 per litre, while that of diesel stood at Rs 68.08 in New Delhi as oil firms raised prices for the ninth day in a row.

In Mumbai petrol fetched Rs 84.70 a litre, while Rs 79.79 a litre was charged in Chennai and Rs 79.53 in Kolkata for the petrol.

Diesel prices were Rs 72.48 in Mumbai, Rs 71.87 in Chennai and Rs 70.63 in Kolkata.

He could have done it if he wished when the crude was low in past years..but he didn't.because our largest business empire had to do some billions of profit...Now it looks like they have funds enough for next 4 elections...so time to lower prices..Yes ,he can very well do it...Our public can be fooled for ever...tell them some thing on religious lines and they forget all our other problems and be busy with dharm and karm...The good news is we are better than Pakistan and Bangladesh ......and we look no further.

More than a week after the state-owned oil firms ended a 19-day pre-Karnataka poll hiatus on revising fuel prices, petrol and diesel rates have sky rocketed.

Fuel price is deregulated. The Government cant do anything other than reduce existing taxes.

Reducing existing taxes, then increases fiscal deficit and in turn has a cascading effect on Inflation -This is what happ during the 10 yrs of MMS.

So this government is no better or worse than any government.

It is a choice you need to take.Do you wish that petrol prices be reduced substantially or all essential prices marginally.

What post does Amit Shah hold in the Cabinet? Hes just the party president of BJP. Theoritically he doesnt have any power to talk about fuel price but as it goes in BJP person not related to the dept speaks about the dept. This is a easy way to escape questions and criticism. With what morality is he talking all this only bhakts can understand.

Why The Modi Govt Was Smart To Not Lower Fuel Prices?
When the crude oil prices crashed, lawmakers decided to give a fraction of the benefits to the Indian consumer, while the remaining was used to cover the fiscal deficit.
In fiscal 2015, benefits of the crude oil crash to India stood at ₹2 lakh crore. This amount was predominantly utilised towards reducing the fiscal deficit. In fact the fiscal deficit hasn't gone south of 4.5% since 2014. Thanks to the fall in fiscal deficit the inflation levels also reduced to single digits, hovering near 6%. The RBI plans to bring this down to under 5% till FY17.

The crude oil crash also helped the RBI build $350 billion worth of reserves, usually used to stem a rupee fall during turbulent times.
Here’s Why You Are Paying So Much For Petrol and Diesel in India
Diesel is now more expensive than petrol at the refinery level. The price of diesel to dealers is more than that of petrol. However, taxes on petrol are higher than those on diesel, just so that the government can keep inflation in check.
How Much Tax Are You Paying?
    Oil Refiner purchase Crude Rs35.12/ltr
    Price to dealers Rs.36.19/ltr.
    Excise duty Rs19.48/ltr
    Dealer Margin Rs3.61/ltr
State Vat Rs 17 to 21/ltr
Retail Price at the Gas station Rs 76.87 per litre.
Excise duties annually raised from the petroleum sector increased from Rs 77,982 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 2,42,691 crore in 2016-17. Annual revenues from excise duties grew at 27% in 2014-15, 80% in 2015-16 and 36% in 2016-17, rising from 0.7% of GDP in 2013-14 to 1.6% of GDP in 2016-17. This substantial additional revenue mobilisation has enabled the Centre to balance its budget without making much effort to raise direct taxes.

India’s Petrol and Diesel Prices Are Among Southeast Asia’s Costliest. Modi Government's Defence of High Fuel Prices Is Flimsy. Nation will remember Modi for record high fuel prices.

When India increase fuel prices for 5 days straight Pakistan reduced the prices.Nepalis is lower.
