Head priest of Gujarat temple booked for rape

Rajkot, May 29 (NIE): The head priest of the famous Madhavraiji temple in Gujarat’s Prachi, was on Monday booked on charges of “rape, criminal intimidation and voluntarily causing hurt” after a woman filed a complaint alleging the priest had repeatedly raped her over one-and-a-half years promising he would marry her, but backed out later.

The woman, a resident of Ankolwadi village in Talala taluka, had given an application to Deputy Superintendent of Police (Veraval Division) on May 23, alleging that Rishigiri Gauswami had been repeatedly raping her since August, 2016. Based on her complaint, police booked Gauswami under IPC sections 376 (rape), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (2) (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).

Prachi is around 20 km from Somnath town.

The woman, in her complaint, stated she had married a man of a Prachi village around six years ago and started visiting the Madhavraiji temple for darshan. During these visits, she came in contact with Gauswami.

“In August 2016, Gauswami invited me to render service in the temple and we grew close to each other. Gauswami then trapped me in an affair, promised to marry me and demanded physical relationship. However, I refused any such favour before marriage. But he forced himself on me and raped me inside the head priest’s room above the temple,” the 25-year-old said in her complaint.

The victim stated that after August 2016, the accused kept on raping her repeatedly. “Therefore, I insisted that he marry me first. But Gauswami told me that I should first divorce my husband. Consequently, I divorced my husband…However, he told me that he would marry me later and raped me again,” the FIR stated.

The FIR further noted that the accused took the victim to Madhavraiji temple one more time on May 7, repeating his promise to marry her. “He demanded sexual favour that day also. However, I refused. This irked Gauswami and he started abusing me and beating me,” the victim stated in the complaint.

The woman in question cheat her husband and she got cheated by her paramour. Here woman is main culprit and priest used her for lust. Now grapes are sour for her. And concocted rape stories will not survive in courts. My ideal advice to all women don’t trust men until and unless he will not marry you in full public view.

    Sampath,

I don't defend killing the man, I very much demand that its a crime and the guilty must be punished.

However, when mercy killing comes into reference, whether its caste or riches, parents of both parties want a match of their status. Will a family give their daughter to a tin-house dwelling man or will the rich bring a DIL from slums ? Obviously impossible.

When we don't build our relationships beyond castes, adjustments in proposals beyond financial status is too much to ask for.

    Jenifer,
Whatever your disclaimer in the beginning of your comment, when I read the body, i could clearly make out that you defend killing of that lower caste(dalith 'christian') boy. Moreover, you termed that ruthless honour killing as 'mercy killing'. You have redefined the word 'mercy'!!

Nothing new in this. Hindu priests or mullahs or Christian priests are not some heavenly creatures and humans like all of us . So they will do the same mistakes which can be seen in the society. We should not defend them no matter which religion we belong to.

    Karthik Karkera,

Priesthood is not a bondage - one can leave it if he can't live according to its principles. However, indulging in deeds forbidden to the profession is deception.

One either must be a protector or a thief. He can't be protector during the day and thief at night.

Exactly but your point is true for all professions isn't it? Rape is not forbidden only for priests but it is forbidden for all irrespective of their profession.Priesthood is just a profession in my opinion nothing more. We unnecessarily glorify them.

    Karthik,

Priesthood especially because its a profession of celibacy. Well, I can't tell a doctor to leave his profession if there was some issue between him and his assistant, or a Lawyer or an office manager.

Men/Women must protect their dignity. If they are risking it, its they who pay for it by being publicly humiliated when fighting for justice. I remember Shiney Ahuja never acted in movies whether or not he indulged in something controversial.
