Mangaluru/Udupi, May 29: People in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi on Tuesday May 29 woke up to torrential rains that lashed the coastal region of Karnataka, causing widespread damage.

Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts on May 29 and 30.

There were reports claiming that a boy had died in Attavar due to rains, however, the fire personnel confirmed that the boy was rescued and is well.

From a few days, the city experienced sporadic rainfall during late evenings. On Tuesday, the momentum picked up as a thick blanket of grey clouds poured down aggressively over the region. Many parts in the city have flooded. Trees have fallen in many areas and buildings and compound walls have been damaged.

Traffic snarls were witnessed on several arterial roads of the city in the morning with normal life being affected as public faced tough time commuting through the flooded roads.

A completely flooded Pumpwell flyover construction site and Thokottu affected traffic severely. A house under construction collapsed at Pumpwell. Kuthar junction virtually turned into a mini island as its surroundings were inundated. The worst hit were two-wheeler riders who could not judge the depth of potholes due to the flooding.

Rainwater flooded Padil underbridge and many vehicles are stuck at present.

More than 20 vehicles were witnessed sinking in rainwater at Bejai and Hampankatta. A few shops also suffered damages.

As informed earlier by the meteorological department, monsoon has hit coastal Karnataka and Kerala which is a week early than it happens every year.

According to meteorological department, Bengaluru, thunder storm likely to affect the district within next 3 hours accompanied with light to moderate spells of rain and strong winds reaching 30 kmph or more.

Udupi

A huge banyan tree was uprooted in Udyavar due to heavy rain. The banyan tree has fallen on the road blocking vehicular movement. Many hoardings, electric poles have also been uprooted. As per sources, nearly 70 electric poles have toppled across Udupi.

Due to heavy rains and the resultant damage, Udupi DC Priyanka Mary Francis has declared two-day holiday, on May 29 and 30, for schools in the district. Holiday had already been declared for schools in Udyavar earlier in the morning.

In Belle gram panchayat limits, lightning struck the house of a person named George Saldanha, causing damages to a television set, two laptops, fans and wiring. The total loss has been estimated at Rs 10 lac.

Electricity supply has been interrupted since Sunday May 28. More than 15 hoardings on National Highway 66 have been damaged due to wind and rain. Several houses have also been damaged due to fallen trees and hoardings. Relief measures are under way.

Speaking to daijiworld, Clifford Lobo, district forest officer said, "Many trees have been uprooted in Udupi, Ambalpady, Udyavar and in Brahmavar areas. We have started work to move the uprooted trees. A huge banyan tree has been uprooted in Udyavar. By evening, everything will be restored to normalcy. We have cut down trees about which we had received complaints. But we cannot predict anything during such a heavy rain."

Lalaji Mendon, MLA of Kaup constituency congratulated the people for their efforts in rain-damaged areas and said, "We will soon form a task force to meet such emergencies. Very soon, electricity supply will be rearranged. We will inform the public about fragile trees which are likely to uproot any time."

Uprooting of trees have also been reported from Ambalpady region too.

Whom to blame ? Politicians ? Officials ? our predecessors ? or ourselves ? If you see last 20 years of development in Mangalore zone , the prosperity was measured in terms of money which individual is having , the number floors in a building, Luxurious cars people own, private concreate roads/pavements, villas, pubs and what not ? Have we selected our representatives based on manifesto they offer ? Politicians usually busy with conducting religious speeches or carnivals to lure the people and pity voters like us got cheated. We do not have one single representative after Srinivasa mallya sir who brought any development oriented projects which people of Mangalore is proud of ? The real prosperity level of Managlore is declining over period of time and pretty sure , soon we will be competing with few under developed zones of India. Name a few blunders ,
We still struggle to complete one simple flyover project
We still accept unscientific highway between BC road to Surathkal
Westill don't have luxury to ride/drive in a freeways or stretched highways
We still happy to see regular accidents in Nantoor circle
We are happy with dangerous Managlore to Moodbidri two lane road
We still happy with unhygienic, and dangerous private buses
We are still ok to stand in a private bus stand which is least neglected in terms of basic necessity
We still Ok to vote any individual who will ask your vote based on religion, hate , caste
We still ok to travel abroad claiming Kudla is heaven
We still ok to those politicians based out of our place who are ready to give our water source to others just to stay in politics
We are still Ok with people who makes day light robbery like sand mafia, timber, Hafta and what not ?
We are still Ok to travel in mud road thinking someone will give us concreate road
and Now , we are still happy with our drainage system which we were proud of till last year !
Only I can say "WAKE UP" and "START QUESTINONG YOUR REPRESENTATIVES"

    Dear Readers,

Its shame that we ppl from DK and Udupi call our self's educated. This is really sick to read such comments, Rain is natural calamity, think about the ppl who lost their lives, there is no one is mourning them here. just blaming political parties.
Kindly answer, if there is much worse rain fall, thunderstorms, tsunami hit in city will still do the blame games? or we just join the hands together and help each other.
It seems like all are waiting for that particular things happen, till then we are relaxed and just play blame game using our phones and computers.

Complete failure of infrastructure which is visible within 2 hours of rain from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon. Crumbling infrastructure without any planning. No drainage system, all the water flows on the road including drainage water. "Boats are ferrying more passengers than the buses on roads today" i feel, but still land, flat rates are skyrocketting.... Water, mud, sand, stones, loose gravel, waste flowing on the roads which is a bad scene for a city like Mangalore. Within 2 hours of rain this is the status???? We are not new to rain but still we are in a worst situation.... I don't no where does the crores & crores go....!
If the rains stops tomm or day after for sure we need new roads except concrete roads...

Where are our so called are true leaders who claimed that they developed Mangalore in to greater city.? Might be all are hiding and cursing the creator of the planet for sending rain.

According to them development means cutting trees, widening roads, giving permission to multi storey buildings, polluting water, encroaching fertile green land and selling it to corporate to built power plants, chemical factories.

We are at the mercy of the universe. Just wait for sometime for rain to stop, time to pass and people to forget, then they will appear from nowhere asking to elect them once agin.

It's a warning for the development of future township and residential complexes. Low lying areas are always in danger of inaundating faster than places in higher elevation. Also depends on high tides. what soever, it's terrible situation. I presume this is the first time in this century Mangaluru is witnessing dreadful situations due to heavy rains. Dear Ivar & Mahi

With all due respect to your knowledge of development done, you didn't seem to complain about the ease of driving around the city on concretized roads, the issue here is the lack of drainage which should have been done simultaneously along the construction of the roads.

Moreover the rains as you are aware have been extremely heavy, hence preparation of the same cannot be done, you also need to keep in mind that we as citizens of Mangalore have more or less called for this situation ourselves, we construct buildings and walls without provisions for free flowing water.

The storm drainage system in Mangalore is ancient and hasn't been updated over the past 70 years of independence - blaming either party or the current corporation doesn't make sense at all. If you have followed the Ex-MLA of Mangalore South, he had clearly pin pointed this as an impending issue for which a 2nd loan was secured from ADB to be utilized towards the improvement and development of a proper drain network. Alas we failed him to complete his vision and I wish the current MLA the very best in implementing such projects
