Mangaluru, May 29: Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner S Sasikanth Senthil on May 29 said that the people of the district need not panic since the district administration is taking necessary action following heavy downpour.
Senthil further said that the district is witnessing heavy rains since monsoon has hit the coastal region and there is no thunderstorm or cyclone effect.
The district administration has already sent teams to work in the rain-affected regions and they have also set up an emergency control room. People stranded in the area can contact control room at 1077 and the team will be ready to address the grievances. They can also contact district administration on following numbers 9448549445 and 9448104455.
The DC has also issued a statement warning fishermen not to venture into the sea.
Holiday has been declared for schools and colleges on May 30. People living near the river and coastlines have been asked to shift to safer places. Tourists too have been asked not to visit beaches in the city since the district is expected to witness heavy rains for few more days.
Earlier, the Indian meteorological department had issued a warning regarding cyclone 'Mekunu' for Maharashtra-Goa coast. It had said that the Mekunu is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and into a severe one in subsequent 24 hours.
Stay indoors, urges MLA Vedavyas Kamath
Meanwhile, MLA of Mangaluru South Vedavyas Kamath who is currently in Bengaluru has conveyed a message to the people of his constituency, asking them to remain calm and stay indoors.
"Do not panic. Stay safe at home. Make sure your children reach home safely from school. If any of your family, friends are travelling towards Mangaluru, Inform them about the current situation and request not to travel unless it is an emergency. We are trying to take all nessecary actions. Once I am back from Bengaluru I will personally check the conditions of the city," he said.
