Rahul terms one paisa fuel price cut as 'prank'

New Delhi, May 30 (IANS): Hours after the Centre on Wednesday reduced petrol and diesel prices by one paisa, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi mocked at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the childish response to the FuelChallenge that he had thrown at him and slammed him for his poor taste in pranks.

"Dear Prime Minister, you have cut the price of petrol and diesel today by 1 paisa. ONE paisa!?? If this is your idea of a prank, it is childish and in poor taste," tweeted Gandhi.

"P.S: A ONE paisa cut is not a suitable response to the #FuelChallenge I threw you last week," he added.

Prices of petrol and diesel were cut by one paisa on Wednesday after the Indian Oil Corp's (IOC) website initially showed a fall of around 50-60 paise per litre of the fuels.

The cut comes after 16 consecutive day of price increase since May 14 when fuel retailers ended the pre-Karnataka poll hiatus. For 19 days there were no movement in prices of both the fuels.

The Congress party on Tuesday slammed the Narendra Modi government for failing to reduce prices of petroleum products and said it was engaged only in managing elections and headlines.

    Petrol price cut:ModiCalculus: #EkPaisa for you. 100 crores for MLA's. #BharatBachao.

The BJP's campaign against fuel price rise was so incessant leading upto last Lok Sabha elections that the Manmohan Singh government had to put proposed hike in diesel price on hold in April 2014. It sensed a serious backlash in the elections, which actually happened thanks to what was described as "Modi wave" in 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Modi government's accountability is far greater than the previous UPA government because during the fag end of Manmohan Singh's second term, the international oil prices had touched $150 a barrel, almost double than today's prices. If you consider the example of petrol and diesel prices in Delhi today - Rs 76 and Rs 68.08 per litre respectively, the highest recorded ever petrol prices had last reached the Rs 76 per litre mark on September 14, 2013, when crude oil prices were hovering around $108-$115 per barrel.
His run of good luck continued till middle of 2017. At one point in January 2016, crude oil price fell to USD 29 per barrel.
    Ho Modi government responded?
The excise duty on petrol and diesel saw increase 12 times between May 2014 and September 2017 before it was cut by Rs 2 a litre in October last year. As per Indian Oil Corporation's price build-up data for fuels, the total tax component charged from consumers stands at 52% for petrol and 42% for diesel. India is the most taxed nation in terms of petroleum products among all South Asian nations.
This brings us to another crucial question: Why hasn't the government included petrol and diesel in the GST regime? The reason is obvious. Under GST, the maximum tax slab is that of 28 per cent whereas the government is collecting much higher taxes by keeping petrol and diesel out of GST. If the government were to do this then at the maximum tax slab of 28 per cent, the per litre retail prices of petrol and diesel would come down to Rs 43 and Rs 37, respectively.

If Rahul ask questions also wrong and if he not ask questions also wrong and looks like BJP want Rahul dance on their tune. If he is in Italy or in his Nani's house, what is your problem????? let him wherever he want, what's BJP's problem. What about our great PM who is always on flight mode???? did he bought anything to our country by these trips other than selling product of Ambani or Adani????? You guy never did anything to this country instead of Bhashan after Bhashan and always behind of Rahul.

Arvind Shetty...you sketched the facts very well. Sometimes I feel Indians who live outside of our country understand the reality in India far better than people living in India. BJP has bought over Indian Media as per the report on BBC. It is also very clear, that they have been instructed to go behind Rahul tirelessly and that is exactly what they are doing. Shame on BJP and BJP Bakhts who simply follow the leader without using their brains.
