Archbishop's letter marks dangerous trend: BJP

New Delhi, Jun 6 (PTI): The BJP on Tuesday hit out at the Goa and Daman archbishop for his claim that the Constitution was in danger, saying it was a "political appeal" by a religious head which marked a "new dangerous trend".

BJP general secretary Bhupender Yadav said the Delhi archbishop had earlier spoken out on similar lines and asserted that the two would set in motion a precedent that did not augur well for Indian democracy.

Archbishop of Goa and Daman Father Filipe Neri Ferrao had in a letter said the Constitution was in danger and most of the people were living in insecurity.

"As heads of religious institutions they must bless all. The distance between a religious institution & politics should be maintained," Yadav said in a series of tweets.

In a swipe at the Goa archbishop, he referred to the proclamation of the Emergency in 1975 and said his office did not see any threat to the Constitution then when it was in danger.
'They are now choosing to speak for political and not religious sections. Religious institutions controlling politics & political opinion happen in theocratic state which was rejected centuries ago," Yadav said.

The BJP leader wondered what would happen if heads of other religious denominations followed the archbishop's example and started making similar appeals.

He said both archbishops might have written their letters in general terms, but their message had not been lost.

After the political letter written by the Archbishop of Delhi, his counterpart in Goa has expressed a similar view. It's a political appeal by a religious head which marks a new dangerous trend in Indian politics. India isn't a theocratic state. It doesn't distinguish on basis of religion. India is world's largest democracy. It's governed by one of the most liberal constitutions of the world," he said.

The very fact that archbishops have expressed their criticism is the best evidence of free speech, he said.

After parading Yogi in saffron robes across the country for elections and exploiting religon for electrol gains, any statement by heads of minorities is considered a dangerous trend of dissent is termed as anti national.

The four years of BJP rule has vitiated the whole atmosphere in our country creating great divisions in our society. We need a PM who is a Statesman like Vajpayee Ji who unites the whole country.

If the BJP has nothing to hide then they need not have denied permission thrice to the United States Commission on Human Rights to visit India.

Why is Yogi Adithyanath who is a religious leader in politics and a chief Minister.

Why are there so many MP's and MLA's in the BJP who are swamis? Is that not mixing politics with religion and creating a theocratic state?

No Bishop or priest is in politics, but here the Bishop as a member of the minority community has expressed concern at the state of affairs where minorities are not feeling safe.

It is his right as a citizen to express himself both as a citizen and as a religious head of a community which feels unsafe and threatened. The ruling dispensation has to therefore confront this issue and try to assuage the feelings of the minorities and take steps to improve the situation and not hide their heads like ostriches and blame the Bishops.

What's wrong in what bishop has said!? So many Swamiji's and other religious leaders have openly spoken venom against other castes with threats and also asked people to vote for BJP!!!. Is this correct!?. After all Christians constitute only 2.4% of India's population and they have contributed to this country like they were 80%!. When some minister says openly that they will change constitution, where were these people who see the threat in a Bishops statement that constitution is in danger!!???

Majority of Christians are feeling insecure in the current enviroment and the letter of the Archbishop reflets the sentiment. Instead of attending to these issues the ruling party wants to hear the narrative that all is well and critise the Archbishop.
Hypocrisy of BJP is very evident here, they have a made a temple priest a CM in UP, they give ministerial berths to Baba's(Computer Baba). They go on temple run and want all the swamijis to so support them and when the Christian leaders make political appeal they cry fowl.
The Church, should not be mute spectator to what is going on it should take positions on what is right and wrong even if it seems political

Leaders take this positively rather expressing in a negative tone, understand their fear factor and work to build confidence, to make it a win win situation. Lets be proactive instead of being reactive and convert every fear into confidence. Jai Bharat, Vande Mataram.

Bupinderji - one question. If distance between religion and politics is to be maintained, why YOGI is the CM of UP, he should teach values at temples for everyone - just not for HINDUS.

The archbishop has the courage to call a spade a spade. It's shameful that in the largest democracy people have no courage to voice their opinions.

Archbishop Anil Couto called for prayer and the Establishment is shivering.

Archbishop Ferrao called upon people to pray for the safeguarding of Constitution and again the Establishment is rattled. The amply makes it clear that the Agenda is set to meddle with the Constitution of India. Dear citizens, please wake up!
