Mangaluru, Jun 6: ‘Beat Plastic Pollution’, World Environment Day theme was observed at the St Aloysius BEd College.

Krishnappa Gowda, rooftop farmer (employee, Government College of Teacher Education, Mangaluru) was the chief guest. He said in his address, “Every year, June 5 is celebrated as World Environment Day to raise awareness about protecting the environment. On this day everyone remembers the environment and forgets it rest of the days. World Environment Day has significance as the day gives us the opportunity to discuss various issues of the environment and come up with steps to save the planet from global warming and climate change.”

The chief guest conducted a demonstration on the process of planting saplings in grow-bags and pots.

Fr Dr Leo D’Souza, director, Laboratory of Applied Biology, St Aloysius College (Autonomous), presided over the programme. In his presidential address he said, “As the world’s population continues to grow, so does the amount of garbage that people produce. The present lifestyle requires easily disposable products; plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic cups etc, but the accumulation of these products has led to increasing amounts of plastic pollution around the world. As plastic is composed of major toxic pollutants, it has the potential to cause great harm to the elements of environment like air, water and soil.”

Students enacted a skit of highlighting the consequences plastic garbage. Nelson D’Souza and his group invoked God’s blessings; Muktha accorded welcome to the gathering. Jishi Mol highlighted the significance of observing environment day along with a video clip. Vanshika introduced the chief guest to the audience. Amanda delivered the vote of thanks. Dr Farita Viegas, principal, graced the occasion and honoured the chief guest with a memento. Sandhya, lecturer, organized the programme. Renita compered the programme.
