Tumakuru, Jun 11: A gang of robbers who waylaid Dhananjaya Swamiji, trustee of Bidanagere Satyasheneshwara Swami temple in Kunigal taluk in the district, took away Rs 25 lac in cash and a luxury car in which the victim was travelling.
The temple stated above is located in Kunigal taluk in the district. It is said that the gang had six members. The robbery happened on the night of Saturday June 9.
On Saturday, it is said, Satyasheneshwara temple was crowded with devotees. The devotees had also liberally donated for the installation of 150 feet high statue of Lord Anjaneya that is under way now. It is said that along with the donations, the money collected in the donation box of the temple too was taken by the Swamiji home.
The Swamiji along with two of his assistants was moving in a car at around 10 pm on Saturday when six robbers who approached the car, in the guise of devotees, requested him to garland their newly acquired car. As soon as the Swamiji got down from the car, the robbers sprayed pepper powder in his eyes, threatened driver, Sridhar, and Nayaz who were inside the car, by flashing lethal weapons, and made good their escape in the Swamiji's car which also contained cash.
Kunigal police are probing the robbery.
