Tribal militant killed in Manipur gunfight


Imphal, Jun 11 (IANS): A militant of the United Tribal Liberation Army was killed in a gunfight with the Assam Rifles in Manipur's Jiribam district on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

Two other militants were injured in the firefight at Khuram in the district and have been arrested, said police sources, citing a report lodged at the Jiri police station by personnel of the 37 Assam Rifles.

According to the report, an M-16 rifle was recovered from the dead militant, who is yet to be identified, and a Chinese-made 9 mm pistol was also found from the injured militants, who have been admitted to a hospital.

Police sources said that combing operations are being conducted in the nearby mountains and rain forests to track down the militants who had managed to escape.
