Dubai: JW Marriot fires chef Atul Kochhar over anti-Islam tweet

Updated

Dubai, Jun 13 (Agencies): Dubai chef Atul Kochhar's services with JW Marriot Marquis have been terminated, an official statement released by hotel chain revealed.

JW Marriot Marquis in Dubai today released a termination letter after Kochhar made Islamophobic remarks in response to a tweet posted by Priyanka Chopra.

The Michelin-starred chef operated the award-winning Rang Mahal India restaurant at Dubai’s JW Marriot Marquis Hotel.

Bill Keffer, the general manager of JW Marriott Marquis Hotel was quoted saying by Gulf News: “Following the recent comments made by Chef Atul Kochhar, we have taken the decision to end our agreement with him for Rang Mahal. With the termination of our agreement, Chef Atul will no longer be associated with the restaurant.”

The statement further said: "At the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai we pride ourselves on creating a culture of diversity and inclusion for our guests and associates across the hotel and our restaurants. We also remain committed to delivering the traditional culinary experience and high service standards that Rang Mahal is renowned for."

Dubai: Call for sacking of Indian-origin chef in UAE after anti-Islam tweet

Dubai, Jun 13 (PTI): A popular Indian-origin chef in the United Arab Emirates has landed in a controversy after he allegedly posted an anti-Islam tweet, triggering calls for his sacking, a media report said on Tuesday.

Atul Kochhar, a Michelin-Star chef well known here for his Rang Mahal Indian restaurant at the JW Marriott Marquis hotel, received flak after taking a dig at Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra for her tweet over an episode in American television series 'Quantico' that purportedly portrayed Hindu nationalists as terrorists, the Khaleej Times reported.

"It's sad to see that you (Priyanka) have not respected the sentiments of Hindus who have been terrorized by Islam over 2000 years. Shame on You (sic)," Kochhar tweeted.

He later deleted the tweet and apologised for the "major error" that was "made in the heat of the moment on Sunday", the paper said.

"There is no justification for my tweet ... I fully recognise my inaccuracies that Islam was founded round 1400 years ago and I sincerely apologise. I am not Islamophobic, I deeply regret my comments that have offended many," Kochhar tweeted yesterday.

The anti-Islam tweet created a furore on social media, with twitterati calling for firing the chef. Popular commentator and Arab journalist Khaled Almaeena tweeted: "You (Kochhar) have offended me..As a person who loves India its people no matter what their caste or creed. As a secular and liberal, it truly is a horror statement."

Some said they would boycott the restaurant. "Chef celebrity showed his true colours. I won't eat here after reading the racist tweets by the head chef," a UAE resident posted on his Facebook page.

"I have cancelled my wedding anniversary meal for next month at your restaurant. You knew exactly what you meant as you tweeted that message," another Twitter user added.

JW Marriot hotel, however, distanced itself from the chef's comments. "We are aware of the comments made by Chef Atul Kochhar. We would like to stress that we do not share the same views as stated in the remark, nor is it a representation of the culture of diversity and inclusion that we pride ourselves on at the hotel," the hotel tweeted yesterday.

Celebrity chef Atul Kochhar has been at the centre of international condemnation after he launched a spectacular attack against Muslims and their faith Islam in the aftermath of the Quantico controversy involving actor Priyanka Chopra.
Kochhar’s blistering attack against Islam had come in response to Priyanka’s apology on the story line of a recent episode of Quantico that hurt right-wing Hindutva groups in India. Priyanka had chosen to apologise even though she had no direct or indirect role in deciding the storyline of her popular American TV drama.
Realising the consequences of his bigotry and open racism, Kochhar was quick to apologise not for his bigotry, but for ‘factual inaccuracies.’
“The UAE’s anti-discriminatory law criminalizes all forms of discrimination on all grounds of religion, belief, sect, faith, creed, race, color, or ethnic origin,” Anyone convicted of breaking the law could face imprisonment of up to five years and a fine of between 500,000 to 1 million dirhams.
Kochhar posted in September 2017, who appeared upset by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing her concern for Rohingya refugees. In another past tweet of Kochhar showing just how upset he was with The Telegraph newspaper for carrying photos of Muslim children with the Indian national flags as part of the paper’s India independence Day feature.
Kochhar is a resident of London, where the then PM David Cameron made Islamophobia a criminal offence at par with anti-Semitic crime in 2015.
Atul Kochhar apologises but his notorious past reeks hatred for Muslims and Islam. Social media laws were very strict in the UAE adding that online comments found to be spreading sectarian hate or racism, especially in connection with Islam and Muslims, were a criminal offence and Kochhar faced a real prospect of spending a long time in jail.
He made nice effort, but he can't unscramble a scrambled egg. This is an apology only to appease local audience & investors.

This is because of becoming too much sentimental or emotional at the moment. If he had waited for sometime to think and then write the reply would have been different or he would not have written it.

Twitter, Facebook , whatsup makes people emotional and the our urge to reply instantly makes us to loose our senses, sentiments for others and later delete or regret.

Please remember what happened to Krishnan Nair for threatening P Vijayan. He lost his job in Dubai. Any pleading did not help him.

In India he would not have been touched for such comment or he would have to gone to the court or union to protest.

Kochar being highly respected and qualified also became a victim of his instant emotion .

Today we read about a lady who refused to go to Iran for a sporting event because she had to cover. Someone wrote a message because they cannot hear Azan in India .But when they visit Dubai or middle east they keep quiet because it is a different country to which they do not belong. Someone may object to church bells ringing or a temple bell tomorrow. Each has its own significance . Each country ,each religion has its own codes and rules. By respecting the same we will succeed , if not we fall from grace how mighty he or she may be or logical or illogical.

Islam terrorized Hindus for 2000years whereas Islam came to India through the saint around 1050 years back and not by terrorising people, then Arab merchants spread Islam with their humbel and honest approach which impressed local merchants as well as kings in southern states.

People who say the muslim kings converted hindus to muslim, I wonder how hindus remained in that large numbers even muslims ruled India for more than 500years.

Please note, he not INDIAN, he is of Indian-Origin.

Sack the ungrateful and pack him off to where he came from. I don't think India has anything to lose from this and nor his family (immediate) could be in India.

Everyone has freedom of expression. Don't people living in India , earning in India bash Hindus, Hinduism and their beliefs all the time ?

    Karthik Karkera,

Have you seen any picture of Indira Nooi with a 'Bindi' on her forehead ? Do you know its significance if she happens to in India ? Similarly, many Indians who are in Islamic countries shed something or the other, to be law-abiding. Ask any Hindu lady who resides in the country this Chef does, if she applies 'Sindhoor' while she goes to work.

I agree with your demand for freedom of expression it should not reach to abuse of others' faith.

I think you are making one crucial mistake of equating India with a Hindu-rasthra. Just because majority people in India identify themselves as Hindus does not mean that Hindus or Hinduism have any special legal status in India. Every citizen of India is equal in the eyes of our constitution and religion is considered as a personal matter of its citizen.

People living in India are having Indian lineage ,so we are not snatching hindus or any others business. Our business is our business, its none of your business, but in gulf be it hindu ,muslim or christian are majority expats ,so they should be careful.

First of all who told this Koccha to go to UAE,if he is so concerned about hindus, why don't do something daana dharma in India.

This man will not be working in gulf anymore ,u wait and watch.Social media will do this job for him.

Bro, India is a secular country with Hindu's in majority which i completely agree. But calling it a Hindu country doesn't make sense as India is notable for its religious diversity, with Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam, Christianity, and Jainism among the nation's major religions, for which me and i am sure almost every other "educated and sensible" Indian citizen is proud of.
And about freedom of expression, If anyone expresses anything in India, they either get lynched or murdered. Atleast, in Dubai , Atul is safe. At the most his contract will be terminated and he will get deported to wherever he is from. He has no worries of either getting lynched or murdered as it is happening in India. I am not supporting any country here. I am just showing you the difference :-).

    Jai Hind
