Rahul wears skull cap for 10 seconds at Iftar party; BJP hits back, calls it 'photo-op'

New Delhi, Jun 14 (Zee News): Congress president Rahul Gandhi's much-publicised Iftar party held on Wednesday has grabbed headlines not because of the guest-list, but for wrong reasons. The Congress leader has courted a controversy for wearing a skull cap offered to him by a Muslim supporter and immediately removing it in just a few seconds.

The entire incident was caught on camera and the visuals of Rahul Gandhi obliging his Muslim supporter by agreeing to wear the skull cap offered by him and then immediately removing it was widely shared on the social media.

The Gandhi scion was sitting with top Congress leaders including former President Pranab Mukherjee when a Congress supporter from the community came forward and offered him the skull cap. Rahul, with a smile on his face, shook hands with him and wore the skull cap, but removed it within ten seconds.

This was reportedly not well received by the Muslim community members present there.

Latching on to the opportunity to attack Rahul Gandhi, the ruling BJP said that the Congress president's Iftar party was just an eyewash and an attempt to appease Muslims for pure political gains. It also termed it as a photo-op and a publicity stunt.

Interestingly, this was Rahul Gandhi's first Iftar party since he took over as Congress chief last year.

The Iftar party was attended by the who’s who of Congress and top opposition leaders.

The dinner saw the presence of former presidents Pranab Mukherjee and Pratibha Patil and vice-president Hamid Ansari.

Congress leaders like Randeep Singh Surjewala, Anand Sharma, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and prominent actress Nafisa Ali also attended the get-together at a five-star hotel in New Delhi.

The Congress President took to Twitter later and tweeted, "Good food, friendly faces and great conversation make for a memorable Iftar! We were honoured to have two former Presidents, Pranab Da & Smt Pratibha Patil ji join us, along with leaders from different political parties, the media, diplomats and many old & new friends."

Opposition leaders like DP Tripathy (NCP), Danish Ali (JD(S)), Manoj Jha (RJD), Dinesh Trivedi (TMC), Satish Chandra Mishra (BSP), Kanimozhi (DMK) and Sitaram Yechury (CPI-M) also graced the occasion.

However, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi missed the party owing to her ongoing treatment abroad.

Rahul Gandhi had on Wednesday triggered a controversy by ending his press conference in Mumbai within 2.5 minutes which left the mediapersons in a state of shock as they had waited for hours to meet him.

Even prominent opposition leaders like HD Deve Gowda, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav and Samajwadi Party leaders Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh Yadav were among the absentees, despite invites being sent out to leaders of at least 17 national and regional parties. SP did not even send a representative from the party to attend the event.

Ha ha..Rahul is in tricky situation here. If he wears cap then he thinks he might lose Hindu votes, if he avoids wearing it, then he thinks that the Muslims will not vote. So trying to do a balancing acting and trying to appease both of them. I hope people recognize this Chameleon(girgit) that changes color for votes.

Why are you swallowing your own words. It seems you are very much of in Rahul PHOBIA.

The word Chameleon(girgit) fits to Modiji. He changes his words and does always U turn.

He had done the balancing act by wearing the skull cap for few seconds and was in par with other participants dignitaries, who have not worn the skull cap.

I had attended many IFTAR parties in Middle East and the hosts knew that I am not having fasting. But as a invitee and the bond, what I had shared with the hosts, I used to attend the IFTAR party.

It is does not matter, whether the invitees are fasting or not, to the hosts. It is brotherhood, caring to each other, accepting pluralism, that all what matters.

..as i know its should not be lavish, no wastage of food..this IFTAAR held at TAJ PALACE five star Hotel..cant imagine how much they charge for a plate of food..His tweet spells out what was discussed..Iftar definition says ' one of the religious observances of Ramadan and is often done as a community, with people gathering to break their fast together'..during this time food served also charity..instead Congress should have distributed rice/fruits in Delhi streets for needy..

Congress party ideology is their own but others copy Congress ideology and claim it as if, their own.

UPA implemented Adhar card was opposed by BJP and later when they came to power, they hijacked it. This is the true face of BJP.

Nothing new. RG sported a beard and wore a skull cap in UP before as well. He became an Janeudhari Hindu Brahmim shiv bakth in Guj. He turned to be a catholic in Mehgalaya. So depending on the time and circumstances RG changes attire and religion. His track record in elections shows the results of these changes.

Do not worry about BJP or Modi. They have 22 states in their kitty and looking formidable. You ahve to worry about Congress and its leader's survival. 33 election losses, 22 state losses, playing side hero to JDS in Ktaka. How did they lose in Ktaka, How were the over hyped Congi leaders sent packing wiht huge margins of defeat. Blaming EVM is not helping or justifying. Moreover now Cong is Planning to be a small part of a big alliance in 2019. You guys have to sit down and plan ahead, rather than blaming God and Modi for everything.
