Suu Kyi meets senior Chinese official on bilateral ties


Naypyidaw, Jun 16 (IANS): Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi met Chinese Defence Minister Wei Fenghe here and discussed bilateral relations, officials said on Saturday.

Wei said China and Myanmar as neighbours have long been witnessing a close friendly relationship, reports Xinhua news agency.

In recent years, said the Chinese official, the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between the two sides has been further developed under the guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Suu Kyi.

The Chinese official also expressed the wish to boost the development of the Belt and Road Initiative to strengthen the cooperation between the two militaries and jointly maintain peace and stability in the border areas.

Suu Kyi said Myanmar appreciates China's outstanding achievements under the leadership of President Xi.

She expressed gratitude to China for its firm support to Myanmar's economic development and peace process.

Wei also met Myanmar's Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Sen-Gen Min Aung Hlaing.
