Mumbai, Jun 17 (TOI): Alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay have tweeted about juniors being subject to sexual harassment. Former students have sent tweets to HRD minister Prakash Javadekar, external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj, home minister Rajnath Singh and the city police with details of student complaints filed with the institute.

In one of the complaints, a student has alleged that a "popular" senior called him over to his room and kissed him and, in another instance, asked the junior to lick his tongue while the alleged perpetrator kissed him.

"Sexual harassment complaints from students of IIT Bombay being pushed under the carpet. Please investigate and take action," tweeted a former student.

"Some students on campus feel the institute discouraged and stopped them from filing a police complaint," said another.

"We cannot possibly legally stop students from filing a police complaint. This is an abject blatant lie," said dean of student affairs Soumyo Mukherji.

Meanwhile, more cases alleging sexual harassment are tumbling out.

When the matter first came to light on March 8, the institute thought the students could have "misconstrued or misunderstood the apparent unwarranted behaviour", but the authorities acted as more than one student had complained.

"The nature of complaints coming now is quite serious and more students are writing about what they underwent. If we had these complaints earlier, the discourse would have been very different," said an IIT official.
