Qatar: Konkani Community holds Night Vigil to Pray for Peace

Media Release (GA)

Qatar, Sep 23: Against the backdrop of the atrocities that are being committed against Christians and Christian institutions in India, particularly in Orissa and Karnataka, the faithful in Qatar, especially the Mangalorean and Goan community, took part in a night vigil that was organized by the Konkani speaking community representatives on Saturday September 20, from 8:15 to 10:15 pm, at the Catholic Church of our Lady of the Rosary, Qatar.

At the outset, Fr Gaspar Fernandes, assistant parish priest, addressed the gathering and summarised the atrocities subjected towards Christians in different parts of India, namely, Orissa, Karnataka and Kerala, followed by a video presentation of the despicable acts committed against the Church and its followers.  The presentation conveyed the true magnitude of the injustice and destruction caused by these acts and deeply touched everyone present. Prayer service began with a talk on peace by Alfred Crasta.  He mentioned that the greatest weapon Catholics have is the Rosary of the Mother Mary which can help in times of difficulties.  This was followed by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and a candle light procession of the Blessed Sacrament which concluded with the benediction.  The funds gathered from the special collection during the night vigil would be sent to the Bishops of Orissa and Mangalore, Fr Gasper said.

It was indeed touching to see the show of support and solidarity towards fellow community members who faced adversity and yet stood firm by their faith.  The assembly was requested not to nourish feelings of hatred, but to win the hearts of those who were responsible for the carnage through prayer and good deeds.

May I remind Mr. Gurudutt cj that our forefathers were not focibly converted to Christianity but with their own free will. This facility is even available today to everyone to accept faith of their own choice. But somebody has to propagate it to make the truth known to all. This is what exactly Catholics are doing. Why then it should hurt any faith's sentiments if not for envy??? Let us admit they are simply jealous of the good works the catholics are doing.

First of all let us find the exact reasons behind these attacks. Publishing & propagating inflammatory materials against the most sacred religion in the world calls for religious intolerance which by itself is justified. i have a great respect for Christians & their noble work. But u also have to remember that down the line you too were converted from sacred Hindu religion & some people do have the same instincts that they can achieve the same even now which i condemn thoroughly.
