Mexico City, Jun 26 (IANS): All 28 members of the police force in the Mexican town of Ocampo were taken into custody after the murder of a mayoral candidate, the state Attorney General's Office has said.
The municipal police, including the chief, were detained on suspicion of ties to organised crime, the Michoacan state Attorney General Office said on Monday.
Fernando Angeles Juarez, running for mayor of Ocampo on the ticket of the centre-left PRD, was gunned down on June 21 inside his home.
Investigators seized cell-phones of all the 28 police officers, Efe news reported.
Two criminal organisations, Jalisco Nueva Generacion and Nueva Familia Michoacana, were battling for control of drugs and other rackets in Ocampo.
The presidential and general elections are scheduled on July 1.
At least three mayoral hopefuls have been slain in Michoacan so far.
