Modi calls Emergency 'dark period', wishes to strengthen democracy

New Delhi, Jun 26 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the 1975-77 Emergency was a "dark period" that the nation could never forget and called for making democracy stronger by "writing, debating, deliberating, and questioning" its vital aspects.

"India remembers the Emergency as a dark period during which every institution was subverted and an atmosphere of fear was created. Not only people but also ideas and artistic freedom were held hostage to power politics," he tweeted.

Modi hailed the spirit of those citizens who firmly opposed the Emergency that came into force on June 25, 1975, leading to suspension of the fundamental rights.

"I salute the courage of all those great women and men who steadfastly resisted the Emergency, which was imposed 43 years ago. Their struggles ensured people power prevailed over authoritarianism and the stifling of civil liberties," he added.

He called for working towards making Indian democracy stronger.

"Let us always work to make our democratic ethos stronger. Writing, debating, deliberating, questioning are vital aspects of our democracy which we are proud of. No force can ever trample the basic tenets of our Constitution," he added.

The Emergency lasted till March 21, 1977. The Congress led by Indira Gandhi was voted out of power in the elections that were held soon after.

What you know BJP you were not yet born then during emergency. Don't live in the past where you have no idea about. Indira congress has contributed a lot including the good out of that emergency which you can not digest. These 4 years of your BJP is like worst nightmare. There is no room for democracy in BJP rule. Strengthening democracy is another Jumla in your fake bhashan.

Modi and his team run out of development program as promised in their election manifesto. They failed the people of India miserably. To conceal the reality Modi/Shah/Jaitely dig old stories to defame one of the bold and courageous PM Indira Gandhi who ultimately paid her dues to this nation by martyrdom. My foot Modi is no where Late Indira Gandhi.

The very fact that people are lynched by sanghi goons just for transporting cattle, women and children are raped on everyday basis, people genuine pleas are ignored, etc mean that emergency is in place!

When you are bankrupt of ideas, when you have failed to deliver on any of your promises and when failure stares at you in the face, you try to dig up forgotten history. Dear Modiji, please remember that the emergency was declared in 1975 and since then there have been 11 general elections out of which 7 have been won by non congress parties including yours. There have been 12 Prime Ministers out of which 8 have been non congress prime ministers including you. For her misadventure Mrs. Gandhi was routed in elections, punished and humiliated by the citizens of this country.

The same citizens brought her back in 1979. Why are you therefore trying to kick a dead horse? Don't you have anything better to do, like introspect on your 4 years of failures and try to provide better governance during your final year, so that you leave behind a better legacy for yourself? You blame the congress for something that happened 43 years ago, but today you have been enforcing emergency like measures subtly like gagging the press and the judiciary, your trolls attacking people who question your dictatorial actions. Issuing threats through your trolls on social media to opponents. Whom are you trying to fool?

The Emergency took place more than four decades ago. That was a very long time back. We all know the merits and demerits of that period. Why is this man talking about that now? That period is over. I wish the PM talked about development, providing jobs and security to the people of this country. We don't want to hear what happened more than 40 years back. That is done and dusted. Kuch kaam ki baath karo Modiji. Enough of all that purana.

Modiji, I think you tried your best to point out against Congress, but found nothing. So you are taking the emergency as dark period. Please note, that was peaceful and people lived happily as one united. Under your governance, where the democracy stands. There is so much of killings taking place and you are not stopping them. Please, stop digging the past and look into the present status of the country. There is lot to do to bring in goodness. We need peace in this country.

BJP and their PM still thinks that they can win next election by recollecting and refreshing the old memories of Indian history for 40 year or 70 years back. But simply they can give i n short or derails of their achievement in four years so that Indian public can vote for them. MODIJI PLEASE NOTE THIS DRAMA OF BJP/RSS WONT WORK IN 2019 ELECTION.
