Indira 'tallest leader', Modi 'authoritarian', says Congress

New Delhi, Jun 26 (IANS): The Congress on Tuesday slammed the BJP for comparing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with Hitler and hit out at Union Minister Arun Jaitley for "distortion of history".

Congress leader Anand Sharma also attacked Narendra Modi and said India was now witnessing a systematic subversion of all institutions that uphold the Constitution and democracy under the watch of an "authoritarian Prime Minister and arrogant government".

"Indira Gandhi was the tallest leader of her times and a democratically elected popular Prime Minister. Jaitley's comparison of Indira with Hitler "is absurd, outrageous and a distortion of history", Sharma tweeted.

"Indira Gandhi's elected government was sought to be destabilised by unconstitutional and undemocratic methods. Emergency was an aberration and Indira Gandhi had herself expressed regret," Sharma added.

Sharma said Jaitley was suffering from selective loss of memory.

"Dictators do not hold elections. Let BJP be reminded that Indira Gandhi lifted Emergency to hold free and fair elections. She herself lost and she accepted defeat and the verdict with humility."

The Emergency came into force on June 25, 1975, leading to suspension of fundamental rights. It lasted till March 21, 1977. The Congress led by Indira Gandhi was voted out of power in the elections held then.

"Jaitley and BJP's obsession with Hitler is understandable. He comes from the RSS-BJP school who celebrate Hitler and eulogise fascism," Sharma added.

Sharma added that "the debate was decisively settled in 1980 when the people of India brought Indira Gandhi back with a thumping majority and dumped her tormentors and opponents in the dustbin of history".

Hitting out at Modi, Sharma said: "What India is witnessing today is a systematic subversion of all institutions that uphold our Constitution and democracy under the watch of an authoritarian Prime Minister and arrogant government, leading to centralisation of power."

"BJP-RSS cannot insult her memory or belittle her Martyrdom. People of India will remember her as a hero," he added.

    Mahesh,

    Those who suffered 'Emergency' may be dead and gone, or are suffering with Alzheimer. But those who sustained Bombay Riots due to demolition of Babri Mosque or riots in Gujarat are living to recall what they have gone through. You have not one word of complain about the personalities caused this anguish, some of whom are actively participating in the present government.

    True, Indira did her will by imposing Emergency bu people ousted her immediately during next elections. However, Indira did not get eliminated, she came again triumphantly soon after. Its good if you put behind the wrong she did but respect her contribution to the nation. May it be creating Bangladesh (free from Pakistan) so that one enemy got less or the existing one's wings crippled. Whether its the wars the nation fought in her direction and sailed through.

    If the present government does just one percent of that what Indira did with Pakistan, today our soldiers need not have to be slain such a number.

    Nobody is defending emergency. People are only trying to stop Modi from running the country by imposing indirect democracy……. Why did nobody speak about emergency in 1989, 1993, 1999, 2004, 2009, 2013? Emergency was fresh in people's minds in 1980 and yet why did people bring Indian Gandhi to power by a massive margin? I was a student during the emergency days and have seen the effects of emergency, have you? I participated in the Janata party processions to kick out the congress in 1977, did you? Indira Gandhi and the congress learnt its lessons then. Why is emergency an important topic today after 43 years? Is it because the clouds of defeat in 2019 are looming for Modi? Is it because he has failed on all fronts? If people oppose the BJP today it is not because of policies. It is because of its rotten ideology of divisiveness and hate and nothing else. With this ideology, you do not need any foreign power to destroy your unity, you are doing it yourself. What is the use of calling yourself the tallest leader with 56 inches chest when you cannot control the lumpen elements in your party from lynching, molestation, threatening and killing innocent citizens due to your hate filled ideology. If you really are that strong and powerful then you would have cracked the whip a long time ago. Your inaction in not snubbing them out proves that you tacitly support them and approve of such acts.

    FYI, there are provisions in our constitution under articles 352/356/360 for imposition of emergency. It's up to the readers to decide as to whose sanity is questionable.

    But these congis are looted and sold our country thats why their party in this situation.

    And their party workers are slaves of this single family.

    Panic mode has set within the BJP and Jaitley in particular. Next year by this time he will be jobless. Poor guy therefore is desperately digging into history and raking up dead issues which hold no significance. He forgets that 8 on the 12 Prime Ministers since 1975 have been non congress ones including his boss. He forgets that the people of this country routed Indira Gandhi and threw her into a dustbin, but brought her back in triumph in 1979. Emergency was not an issue for the people in 10 out of the 11 general elections since 1975, so why is he bringing up emergency of 1975 now after 43 years? Polarization is failing, engineered riots are failing, false promises and jumlas are failing. Therefore he is trying his luck with the subject of Emergency now.

    Indiraji is iron lady for putting emergency for no reason there by getting signature from president jail singh when he was taking bath. Indira Gandhi should be compared with Sonia Gandhi not with deshbhakth Narendra Modi.

    Indira ruled India and laid her life, her son ruled the nation, her grand children and great grand children are in India living respectfully but this man is still digging Indira's grave to find answers about the origin of her name.
